The Art of Experimental Series: Unconscious Bias & Inclusive Language Intervening Systemic Change Mindsets of Social Intrapreneurs, GALs, ABCD Experts

How the Social Intrapreneurs, GALs, and ABCD Practitioners ## Experts dealing with "Unconscious Bias" ...

Let's first review what Bias is .. Biases is a subjective prejudice against a thing, person, or group, and usually tends to be unfair with positive or negative consequences. Biases are held by individuals, groups, and Institutions. Regarding "Unconscious Bias" is related to an instinctive process - a result of every individual past experiences. This point is significantly important to be realized that our actions and decisions might be usually or sometimes an outcome of our unconscious bias.

Refer to some sources of the terminology about "Unconscious biases"

Most likely related to social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside their conscious awareness. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one's tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing.

To guide our mindset more objectively rather than tend to be subjective hence equipping ourselves with valid data and information as a basic consideration before taking decisions and actions is the best one and the greatest preventive.

When landed at Coady Institute in St. Francis Xavier University, it was my 2nd visit which made me feel like back again in my inspirational 2nd home and hopefully can be expanding the opportunities for the 3rd, 4th, and some significantly more. It's a lovely wonderful environment, and having an opportunity to meet again with different diverse leaders and communities from all around the world is the best experience in life. Combining with my learning course with Ashoka, a reflection to strengthen a road-map collaboration through producing a lasting positive impact at a greater scale has begun. Understanding a systemic change mindset from "Sustainable issues" from the different diverse fellows from other different continents and countries for instance Culture and civilization of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies from a global context, Health safety environment, Sustainable reporting, Emission reduction, Sustainable supply chain, Energy efficiency, Green and sustainable product, ESG rating and reporting, Water management, Circular economy, Carbon tax, Biodiversity, Gender equality, Energy, Transportation, Material and Buildings, Agriculture, Food, and Forest Products, Affordable Housing, Climate and, Land Use, and many more, therefore, can encourage myself to identify the connectivity with each formula like (1) Direct Service; (2) Scaling Direct Service; (3) Systemic Change; and (4) Shifting Mindset.

Everyone is a Change-maker. "Everyone" (these biases may exist toward people of various races, ethnic groups, gender identities, sexual orientations, physical abilities, and more) is a "Change-maker" - where anyone can apply the skills of change-making to solve complex social problems. We believe that "Anyone (this implicit bias refers to the associations that are made between different qualities and social categories such race, gender or disability and are judgments that are made without conscious awareness. These automatic preferences or stereotypes are a major contributor to a lack of workplace diversity) can learn and apply the critical skills of empathy, teamwork, leadership, and change-making to be successful in the modern world, individually and collectively".

Depending on what category of "Systemic Change Mindsets" we want to identify and dig into more in-depth. This category is usually based on the priority of what kind of societal challenges in silos want to be solved.

To innovate throughout the company, organization, community, and other specific entity, hence, we must create a culture that encourages cooperation among teams, rewards creativity, and fosters diverse and positive working styles that create opportunities for every individual to have an intrapreneurship shifting mindsets to grow and thrive.

Building, Developing, and Having "Systemic Change Mindsets not only spark but also scale.

Therefore, some formulas, ways, skill sets, and support systems are to be considered in designing (1) Direct Service; (2) Scaling Direct Service; (3) Systemic Change; (4) Shifting Mindsets.

  1. Purpose Beyond Profit - means the need to have a clearly articulated purpose that references social impact automatically creates a more supportive environment for social intrapreneurs. Officially recognizing purpose beyond profit enables social innovators to link their new ideas to priorities, and illustrate how their efforts support broader definitions of value and purpose.
  2. People as Change Agents - collaborate with social entrepreneurs, or optimize internal resources by building capabilities for innovation, and developing rewards and incentives that encourage sideways thinking and experimentation. As part of this, companies should ensure that performance metrics incentivize innovation. Companies or Organizations also need to revisit recruitment and training programs to ensure that they are attracting and retaining people with relevant competencies, including systems thinking, creativity, and collaboration.
  3. A Generative Pipeline - develop programs and processes explicitly designed to generate, incubate, and scale ideas by investing in mentoring and network development, funding, and financing for instance from Major Green Financial Instruments with low-interest rates (e.g. Green Loans, Green Bonds, Green Insurance, etc.). There is a growing demand for sustainable bonds from international investors, and issuing sustainable bonds can attract investors. Refinancing with a sustainable bond is easier, especially for those with international standards such as the EU standards, which are popular in the secondary market. By issuing sustainable bonds - if we refer to a report from Deloitte - they said that companies can fulfill their CSR in this way. Actively involve business unit leads in the governance and prototyping of projects to build bridges for integrating back into the business.
  4. Connecting Motivated & Competence People as a driven team.

Regarding the experimental series of Systemic Change Mindsets that I learned during the program residency at CoadyStFX, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, one of them is about "Climate Change and Land Use" which benefits people and protects the environment. Direct Service examples from Antigonish for instance are surrounded by parks, beaches, hiking, and biking?trails, including the popular Antigonish Landing Trail?and the multi-use Keppoch Mountain?and Beaver Mountain Park. Scaling Direct Service by these initiatives then can support public and private sector policies, programs, and finance that help conserve forests and lands which can increase their ability to remove carbon from the atmosphere. A network of communities who are committed to planting or maintaining regularly as well as periodically, while Systemic Change aims is by secure the rights and livelihoods of indigenous people and rural communities including protecting biodiversity and ecosystem services. Other new ways of generating revenues from living trees are introduced (for instance: Eco-tourism, Superfood delivered to Farmer's Market every Saturday and Wednesday in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, etc.) that benefit local communities more than cutting the trees down.

Shifting Mindsets through Understanding and reflecting on Inclusive Language

Deliberate language choices (Shifting Mindset) for various representatives of regulators, governments, professional associations, community development org, etc. can make a positive vibe like people feel empowered, included, and comfortable, and prepare people to take responsibility for the words they use or negative vibe e.g. intimidated, defensive, or excluded. This inclusive language can help to increase public awareness of the sustainability reporting issue, campaign, regular publications, strategic recommendations, etc. Some guidelines that can be used for reflecting on inclusive language for instance: (1) Shift focus from people to the system that creates inequalities, e.g. "communities facing barriers", or "people disadvantaged by the system" rather than say food insecurity, inadequate housing, etc., (2) Be specific as possible, (3) Avoid judgmental language, but use a neutral term such as deal with, live with, etc. Referring back again to Climate Change and Land Use in Antigonish, then the inclusive words that can be used, for instance, "Forest ecosystems are now understood to be living beings that are protected by rights.

Think deeply about the decisions that we want to make, and how those choices might affect them or others. While this analogy also can relate to when we are playing chess which is always against an opponent, learning to anticipate the moves of others. This can help to build empathy to learn what they might do in another person's place. Building Empathy is the key to balanced "Unconscious Bias", and in the most simplistic form, chess is quite similar to a large life puzzle. To "solve" a chess game, players must use problem-solving skills to decide which pieces they should move to yield the best results on the board always being more aware of own themselves is the key.

Let's practice and advance our "Systematic Change Mindsets"

We and I love to help to generate cutting-edge solutions to address the systemic problems exposed by the current global crisis.
