As I steered upwards at Cy Twombly’s 2006, Untitled, I wondered how a 7, 8 or 10-year-old Lisa might have received this painting. As an adult, this painting towered over me. I imagine that as a child, my head would have had to tilt way back to see this seven-foot-tall artwork in its entirety. I would have tried to make sense of these crimson red, playful, loopdy-loops. I might have even thought I could replicate what I was seeing. It is that sense of wonder that art offers children, that I wish to share with special needs students, in New York city classes. You see, some special needs students seldom go on field trips to museums, galleries, or Auction Houses. The goal of my Sotheby’s thesis is to bring artworks, by artist like Cy Twombly, into their classrooms and their lives.
