What can they do when the have a space to fill with an image and there is no photo or graphic that fits the bill? The image has to make sense and add extra comprehension to the story whether in print or on a website. The answer is to commission an illustration. This can be a graphic, a cartoon or a caricature or combination of all three, as long as it makes sense and helps to encapsulate the information in the feature as well as adding a little bit more. Cartoon illustrations help a reader through an article and can be used to break up books into easily-digested sections. A good cartoonist/illustrator will work with an art editor or design manager going through a series of rough ideas before arriving at the final visual idea. Problem solved!
