The art of doing nothing

It is summertime in the northern hemisphere, and for most people, that means anticipating a break from work to escape the daily stress of our busy lives.? Whether they seek a tropical vacation or are satisfied with a ‘staycation’ at home, the desire is usually the same – to do absolutely nothing, at least no activities that are being seen as a burden, such as work or doing chores around the house.? In German, we have an expression for this state: ‘Einfach die Seele baumeln lassen’ (which translates to ‘simply letting your soul dangle').?
Doing nothing and being contemptuous at the same time has become an art in Western societies, where action is always seen as superior to inaction. We are constantly bombarded with stimuli, such as e-mails, television, or social media, and we feel that checking in is expected even when we are on vacation. We have become conditioned to be constantly ‘on.’
Unfortunately, not caring for our hearts and souls leads to significant health risks and potential burnout.? I speak from experience. At the height of my corporate career, I was trying to be Superwoman and shouldered an impossible workload and 70% global travel in a toxic work environment.? Moments of doing nothing did not exist, and my soul paid the price, which is why I was relieved when I parted ways with that employer.
On the other hand, doing nothing and finding stillness in contempt has well-researched benefits such as increased creativity and energy, better sleep, greater resilience, lower blood pressure, and so on. Yet, unplugging does not come quickly to everyone, so let me give you a few pointers on how you can find stillness more often and in your everyday life without waiting for that next vacation.
1.??????? Schedule time for yourself
Permit yourself to get away from other people and obligations you might feel you have to find a little tranquility.? You deserve it!

2.??????? Spend time in nature
Nature has a calming effect on the mind, especially when we become the observer and feel grateful for God’s creation; knowing that we are part of something bigger lets daily worries dissipate.
3.??????? Turn off devices
Get away from the mindless consumption of information input.? Unless someone’s life is in danger, responding can probably wait a bit.
4.??????? Experiment with meditation
Many people think meditation is complex and not for them, but it is easy when you change your perspective about it.? No one expects you to sit in the lotus position for 30 minutes off the bat and be at peace without your mind wandering.? Start small and find meditation by observing without judgment.?
I have learned to let my soul dangle frequently, pretty much anytime and anywhere I am, and if I can do it, so can you.? The benefits are so rewarding when you quiet your mind.?
