Art doesn't have to be just painted on buildings.

We painted the streets in Webster City, a one-block area, as a fundraiser for an arts group. The mayor collected old paint on a clean-up day and kept the usable paint, which we used to paint. There were all different kinds of paint—interior, exterior, smooth, glossy—you get the idea.?
Did the art last very long? I really don't remember!
That's the point: Locals were excited to see the work done by the various businesses that participated. There was an event where that street was showcased, and more people saw it (including tourists). I don't remember hearing anyone complain about the paint not lasting very long.
The project involved lots of people participating, not just one person doing all the work. Those people told their friends about the artwork. And they went and saw it. And they learned about the art organization.?
The next year, the city painted over it with white paint and started over. This was a city street by a medical clinic, a park, and a bar - so there was lots of foot traffic, too.?
Cuba, Missouri, is known for its murals; some are painted on the buildings.
Viva Cuba has been around for a long time and does a great job of maintaining their artwork. They have learned and adapted as they go along.
