The Art of Digital Print Making at iMET Center Fab Lab
Friday at Gateway Technical College's Industrial Design Fab Lab at S.C. Johnson iMET Center Sturtevant, artists met to explore making prints using digital technology.
Master Print Maker David Jones, of Jones Propp Studios, myself, Samira Gdisis, of Black Eyed Press, Graphic Design Artist/Photographer Sue LaCanne, and others got together to apply different technology to the art of making prints.
I have been working some smaller sample drawings, attempting to translate them into blocks from which to print, when I ran into David and his wife Marilyn.
Turns out David has been working digital for years, and was even featured in a Publication! The robot prints he did were amazing!
I had him sign my copy of the book, perhaps a weak moment. We experimented sending images to the laser and engraving, as well as doing some CNC carving to print from.
Here is David diligently manning the press.
Overall we still have a great deal of exploration we hope to get to, including carving into various materials, more CNC ways to carve, multiple plates, etching into the paper directly, and even 3D printing directly to various surfaces.
We hope to meet regularly, and there is no limit to the possibilities. Special shout out to Gateway Technical College for allowing us to descend upon the lab, and create art. If anyone is interested in participating please don't hesitate to contact me! Cheers!
