About

J. M. W. Turner, Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino, 1839

Description of the Artwork: Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino (1839) by J.M.W. Turner is a stunning depiction of the Roman Forum (then known as Campo Vaccino, or "Cow Field") in the heart of Rome, with the ruins of ancient Rome bathed in luminous light. Turner’s portrayal of the Forum captures both the grandeur of the ancient city and the atmosphere of its modern state during his time, where remnants of past glory coexist with everyday life.

The painting features a dramatic use of light, with a glowing sky as the sun rises or sets behind the ruins, casting a golden hue over the city. The iconic columns of the Temple of Saturn and other ancient monuments appear against the soft, atmospheric background, creating a dreamlike, almost ethereal scene. People and animals are scattered throughout the foreground, giving life to the ruins and contrasting with the eternal architecture of Rome.

Turner’s mastery of color and light is evident in the way he blends shades of warm golds, soft blues, and cool greens. His brushwork, though more fluid and expressive than his contemporaries, brings clarity to the grand architectural forms while adding an air of vibrancy and movement to the sky and landscape.

About the Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) is widely regarded as one of the greatest landscape painters in British art. His career spanned more than five decades, during which he redefined landscape painting with his unique approach to light, color, and atmosphere. Often referred to as "the painter of light," Turner pushed the boundaries of what landscape painting could represent, gradually moving toward abstraction in his later works. His influence was profound, inspiring later generations of artists, including the Impressionists, and cementing his place in the canon of art history.

Turner was known for his adventurous spirit, traveling extensively across Europe. Rome was a particular source of inspiration for him, and this painting reflects his deep admiration for the city’s ancient monuments. His fascination with nature’s power and history’s impermanence led him to create works that evoke both the beauty and fragility of the world.

Technical Information. Medium: Oil on canvas, Dimensions: Unframed: 91.8 × 122.6 cm (36 1/8 × 48 1/4 in.), Framed [Outer Dim]: 122.6 × 153.4 × 11.1 cm (48 1/4 × 60 3/8 × 4 3/8 in.)

Fame and Importance: Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino is one of Turner’s most celebrated late works. It was the last painting he exhibited at the Royal Academy, and it reflects his matured style, where atmosphere and light take precedence over detailed, realistic depiction. The work exemplifies Turner’s ability to balance romantic idealism with the majestic decay of ancient Rome, encapsulating his fascination with history, architecture, and nature.

The painting is highly regarded both for its technical brilliance and its emotional depth. It fetched a record price at auction in 2010 when it was sold to the J. Paul Getty Museum, further attesting to its significance in the art world and among collectors. Today, it remains an iconic example of Turner’s genius in capturing the transient beauty of landscapes and the grandeur of historical places.
