Communication is a tool to exchange the internal emotions and thoughts. Being a writer takes this a notch ahead, it then becomes art. Art infuses elements of surrealism and has the ability to change the emotional state of the audience.
That's what an artist has, an ability to control the mental state of the audience. You might have had the best start in the morning and perhaps your boss gave you hint that you will get the position you've been eyeing for a year now. But then, try reading Thomas Hardy the very same day, and he will clasp your brain with his hands, make you fall in love with the protagonist and then Kill it. He WILL break your heart, on your best day.
Same goes for the paintings of Renoir, you might have had shittiest day ever, but if you look at his work, you will escape to his world and WILL have a little dreamy smile on your face.
What is common here in the work of these Masters : Ability to change the emotional state.
This is the crux when it comes to art of communication as well. If you are a leader addressing your team, and you make no difference to their emotional state, you have failed. Its worthless. If you're in a relationship and your girl had a bad day : If you cannot make her happy with her conversation, you are boring. If you are giving your pitch to the investor and by the time you are midway in the conversation and investors state of mind has not changed from skeptical to dreamy, you are doing it wrong.
Strive for this : Ability to change the emotional state. This is the crux when it comes to communication, when it comes to art.
TL;DR : Secret to art of communication is ability to change emotional states
