The Art of The (Change) Deal

We've all heard that 'people don't like change'. Of course, that can be true.
However, on closer inspection, it seems that behind much 'change resistance' lies the poor 'net profit' deals people experience from change.
After all who likes to be offered - let alone handed - a poor deal? And to be told there's not much room to negotiate?
Like it or lump it!
Change is a 'Deal' - whether we see it like that or not
Whatever change we are seeking to bring about - as a fast-moving entrepreneur leading a rapidly changing set of collaborations, as a busy middle manager in a pressurised corporate environment, an ambitious change professional, or at the top tables leading through the minefield of major change - we can probably be more creative in generating much better change deals.
A world of opportunity - with risks to manage
This means, actively managing the tangible, intangible and ambiguous 'gains and losses from change' more proactively. There are so many opportunities to do that at organisation level, with external stakeholders, and internally at sub-culture, team and individual levels.
I've shared below a short A to Z (as a 'Starter for 10'). I'm sure you can add a lot more factors!

If we were to put our heads together, the stories would flow of good, bad and ugly stories involving these and other factors. I'm convinced that many of us recognise 'X-Factor' and 'Zing' as real features of top teams! When change is rushed we can accidentally destroy these vital elements.
Personally, I find the 'Jobs to be Done' approach by Jim Kalbach very helpful in creating and changing Deals. I outlined this in a previous LinkedIn article 'What's In It For Me, July 15 2022.
I am also looking forward to Jacqueline Kappers publishing her book on managing gains and losses for change (in 2024, i believe). She has much to offer us in this area.
Joy in your work
As the summer rolls on, I wish you joy in your work!
May you enjoy new levels of freedom as you become even more inventive and creative in making even better 'Deals for Change'!

1 年Thanks for sharing David. I really like the A - Z key words to prompt our thinking as to what is being lost or gained in any change initiative.
