THE ART OF BEING NICE IN BUSINESS

Inspired by small business owners in Rotterdam West

We all like to think we’re doing the right thing—whether it’s supporting sustainability, promoting diversity, or prioritizing health at work. But lately, I've been reflecting on a more basic question: Are we making an effort to be nice in business? How often do we do something thoughtful for colleagues, clients, or partners without being asked? When did that stop being a given?

These thoughts were sparked by observing small business owners in Rotterdam West, where I live.

Inspiration 1: Shahzad, likely sharing a light-hearted conversation with his client.

Shahzad at Patchi Alotchi takes a curious interest in how his clients are doing. He remembers little stories from past visits, and somehow always leaves them in a better mood by the end of the haircuts. Without fail, he offers them a cup of chai afterward. He’s not just great at his job – he’s genuinely nice!

Inspiration 2: Yasir, posing with his clients (and probably brand ambassadors!).

When I started with Yasir at De groene Garage (previously Bruut), I had an ACL tear and chronic lower back pain, but thanks to his guidance, I've recovered and grown stronger. He tailors his approach to each client, always keeping their unique needs in mind. And if you don’t show up for a few days, you’ll get a message like, “Bro, make time for yourself.” He doesn’t just help me stay in shape—he goes above and beyond, even accommodating me on his off days when I’m swamped with work or haven’t slept enough because of having an infant at home. That’s just the kind of person he is—he’s extremely nice!

Inspiration 3: Janna, in her happy place—surrounded by her work.

Janna, from Janna's Bloemenpleintje, a flower shop near the scenic Mathenneserbrug, has always been the go-to for my wife and me. Last year, after our baby was born, I stopped by for flowers for Annelies, and Janna threw in a small bouquet and told me to send her love. A few days ago, when I told her about this blog and asked for her photo, she laughed, saying, “Did I? I don’t remember doing that, but it sounds like me!” She’s not just a florist extraordinaire—she’s undoubtedly nice!

There are so many other kind business owners just in this neighbourhood– Walid at IJssalon Noli, Harjod at Singh's Mini Markt and the list goes on.

Niceness is all around us if we're open to it. It’s not something to glance at like a billboard on the highway; it’s something to take in, be inspired by, and talk about—like art in a gallery.

What about you? Do you have a "nice" business experience to share? And besides the perks of a cute baby, what do you take away from this? ??
