The Art of Asking the Right Questions in Interviews

The Art of Asking the Right Questions in Interviews

Interviews aren’t just about answering questions but also about asking the right ones.

Want to stand out in your next interview? Here’s why asking the right questions is crucial.

I have interviewed thousands of people and I have prepared thousands of people for interviews. Here’s what separates the great talent from the exceptional talent:

The ability to help the interviewer image you in the role, in real-time.

When a candidate had me imaging them in the role, working with the team, developing talent, driving results, and how we would work together… ??? You’re Hired!

This level of positive ideation by the interviewer always leads to a job offer.

Our brains are designed to predict outcomes. Predicting how a candidate will fit is where the magic lies in the interview process. And after helping hundreds get promoted, and thousands through the interview process, this one thing stood out!

When the candidate started asking specific questions, I either imagined them in the role or I didn’t.

All experience & qualifications equal, one candidate separates themselves in the interview.

It was simple: when they asked questions, I had to think to answer. This started the process of me imagining them in the role or not.

Here are the Pro Questions to ask when interviewing for You and to separate yourself in the interview process:

  1. What does success look like in this role over the next 6–12 months? Helps you understand performance expectations and priorities.
  2. How does the company support employees' career growth and skill development? Shows you value personal and professional development.
  3. What are the biggest challenges someone in this position will face? Prepares you to hit the ground running and display problem-solving skills.
  4. How would you describe the company’s culture and leadership style? Gives you a glimpse into the day-to-day environment and team dynamics.
  5. Can you share an example of someone who thrived in this role? What made them successful? Offers insight into what qualities are most valued in the position.
  6. What opportunities exist to collaborate across departments? Highlights your interest in teamwork and cross-functional contributions.
  7. How does this role contribute to the company’s long-term goals or mission? Positions you as someone who is thinking strategically.
  8. What would the onboarding process look like for someone in this position? Indicates you’re thinking about how to quickly adapt and add value.
  9. Is there anything about my background or experience that gives you pause? Shows confidence and openness to addressing concerns head-on.
  10. What are the next steps in the interview process? Reinforces your interest and keeps you informed about timelines.

You don’t have to ask all 10. Select what makes sense for you. Make them your own. Get specific to the interviewer, the position, and the role.

In any interview, it’s easy to focus on answering questions, but asking the right ones is just as important.

Your questions can demonstrate that you’ve done your research, that you’re genuinely interested in the role, and that you’re thinking critically about how you’ll fit into the company culture.

P.S. Do you ask questions during the interview process?

Asking questions is a must. The worst possible answer one can give to being asked if they have any questions is some form of, "No, I have no questions." One thing I always counsel jobseekers on is that you ask different questions of different interviewers. Some questions that make sense to ask a recruiter or HR rep make no sense to ask someone who reports to the hiring manager.

Pro Tip: Before asking questions in an interview, research the company’s recent achievements or challenges. Tailoring your questions to their current priorities not only shows preparation but also positions you as a solution-oriented candidate.
