The Art of Articleship !

Summarising the things I learnt and unlearnt in the past two years of my articleship.

All thanks to this place <3

THINGS NOT TO DO

  1. Don't take your free time for granted. Your final attempt may appear far away, the earlier you start preparing the safer you feel.
  2. Don't gossip. Office gossip takes you nowhere.
  3. Don't always look at the negative side. No one wants to hear “ Oh, I have too much work and too little time” Everyone is under pressure. People overwork themselves. It is very common.
  4. Don't go around announcing “ Classes are more important to me. Screw the work”. You are here to learn the practical aspects of being a CA. Your classes will never help with that and your firm doesn't pay you for attending classes and keeping work in the sidestep.
  5. Don't bluff. Don't act like a know it all. The qualified CAs around you won’t find your overconfidence cute. You are no more a kid. You will grow through what you go through.

THINGS TO DO

  1. Ask. Ask WHY. Ask WHY your senior wants you to document something or perform a particular procedure. Curiosity will take you places.
  2. Have a plan. Stick to it. Simple. Decide timelines for each subject. Enquire about classes. Last minute is not the ideal time for you to do all these.
  3. Be an asset to the people who work with you. Be unassuming. Your team should be able to rely on you for crucial stuff. No one likes to ask for help from an arrogant person.
  4. Be eager. Eager to learn more, eager to do a lot more. If you want to do a particular component or a particular client, ask for it. More often than not, your seniors will give whatever you ask because eagerness will make you perform better.
  5. Build your network. Two years ago, the only CAs I knew were my IPCC faculties. Now I have more than a hundred CAs in my contact list. I can learn something from each of them. Be it their grit, the passion for audit, sincerity, modest nature. You will take something back from every person you meet in this Articleship journey. It is an enlightening experience to say at the least.

Hope this article helps. Have a great day ahead !
