The Art of Activating Your Creative Brain: The Science-backed Way
June Mineyama-Smithson
Artist | Design Lecturer | D&AD Judge ?? Spreading optimism
Do you consciously?feed your creativity? As a graphic design?lecturer, I've noticed a pattern?in my students — Good output comes out of good input, both quality and quantity.?Creativity doesn't happen in a silo.
Activate your creative brain
But how exactly can you do that? The answer lies in neuroplasticity - the science behind the brain's ability to change and adapt.?
And the best way to activate it? Be curious and explore the world around you.?To help you get started, I’ve put together a list of things I’ve been doing to boost my creativity.
Free exhibition: Gilbert & George Centre
An art centre dedicated to displaying art of Gilbert & George in Shoreditch, London. Tongue firmly in cheek.?Entry is free with no booking required.
Immersive experience: Thin Air — The Beams
Highly immersive exhibition with?light sound and space near London City Airport. Hefty £25 entrance fee but I?think it's well worth it for the long-lasting inspiration.
Get your hands dirty: Painting workshop
I joined a large-scale painting workshop by artist? Cristina Guitian ?at?Eye to Pencil. Adobe Illustrator is my go-to creative tool, so this was definitely out of my comfort zone but I really enjoyed painting intuitively and am less scared of acrylics now!
Online Course: Graphic Design: The Art of Shape and Color
Last but not least...Come and learn a new way to harness colours and shapes on my?Domestika course.?You’ll learn my unique approach based on my Japanese background and years of industry experience. Currently on?a?massive?introductory discount?at?£9.90?(usually?£59.90).
Already signed up by more than 300 people in just two weeks, the course has a really lovely community of like-minded colour lovers.
