In an interview with Mike Wallace, Frank Lloyd Wright was asked what is the worst trait in a human being. His answer was simple it is arrogance. He followed by saying that arrogance is nothing but an indication of an empty shell and that arrogant people usually have less to offer.
Meeting entrepreneurs by the dozens and watching them pitch and present their businesses and ideas it is clear that arrogance is the worst trait an entrepreneur can have. The common mistake is to confuse arrogance and confidence.
Here are two definitions from the web of the two terms, the difference is clear:
Arrogance
An attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions.
Confidence
A feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities.
I will also agree with Frank Lloyd Wright that arrogance is the worst trait in a business person, this trait is often found associated with financial achievement. Interestingly enough I have never met an arrogant scientist.
A humble self-confident entrepreneur is indeed the one that will ultimately win the crowd of seasoned investors.
Ask yourself am I arrogant or confident?
