Around the Bases 8/2

Welcome back! Hoping everyone's summer is going well and thanks to all of you for your time here every week. Your support means a ton as we keep on rolling into the months ahead. To those of you making your first voyage here, I hope this space can give you a lift of some sort with what I add below. The community here has made some nice gains recently, so thanks again for spreading the word about the newsletter.

We have all mentioned our bosses from time to time when work comes up. "My boss said" or "I need to talk to my boss about that", etc. The question I pose there and have said to a number of colleagues in my past is "Who is the boss...of you?" Easy answer: It is YOU. Yes, we all have someone we report to, but how often do you check in and report to yourself? Your work universe is important, and advocating for yourself to those in charge is key, but not at the expense of your own situation. It's easy to bury yourself in the process and lose your way. Do your best to regularly check in with yourself (a self-performance review?) and see how you are handling the day-to-day, be it seeking out new challenges at your current place of employment, or looking for your next destination. You matter, and ultimately you are the boss of you.

Time- managing it is one of the true tricks of life. As the summer rolls along, I find myself running from task to task like a contestant on the Price is Right playing "the Race Game" (I prefer "Plinko"). Feeling the same way? Hopefully, this week's Something to Watch comes from an expert in the field of time management. Laura Vanderkam (a great follow) offers this with some great insight. She has a few books as well, and has been on more than her share of podcasts.

How to Gain Control of Your Free Time

I'm a pretty curious person, and that curiosity has served me pretty well in a lot of different times in my run. This week's Something to Read is from ??Scott Shigeoka (a cool follow) and it really dives into the power of curiosity.

SEEK: How Curiosity Can Transform Your Life and Change the World

This week's Something to Listen To is a podcast episode it came across that may hit a mote or 2 as we head into the fall and the super-fun performance review season (who needs football?). "Passion Struck" has a lot of episodes to offer, and in this one, Miles John (host, author and yes follow him) chats with Dr. Tessa West (another great follow, also an author) with a great look at career therapy.

Why Your Career is Like a Relationship

Here are the Top 10 roles I saw this week, with the first 5 coming from our team at Paramount. I can get you right in the process for those roles, and may have a way or 2 into the others as well. The fall sports are ramping up, so feel free to DM me here or email me at [email protected] for more info on any of the posts you see below.

It's been a great summer seeing so many in our community here start a new professional journey the last month or 2. Be it under circumstances you control or ones you can't, there is a new path out there for all of us at some point. The path to what you are looking for is never a straight one, and having someone to help you navigate your way (I know this first hand) is often needed. If you find yourself looking for an ally who knows a thing or 2 about the sports media industry, we should talk. I have spent a long time in the business and rolled with every change that has come along the way. Resumes, demo reels, LInkedIn profiles, contact information and general strategy all go hand in hand with a search for your next move, and it is a lot to sort out. Please check out my website below and see how we can help each other with any of the things I listed above and whatever else you are needing some help with. You can DM me here or email me at [email protected] to set up a free consultation call. Investing in yourself is worth it.

That's it for this week- a quick shout to those in the community who are starting something new (you know who you are!). Have a great weekend!
