Around the Bases 5/30
Welcome back! Thanks for your time here as June sits at our doorstep, and I hope everyone's Memorial Day weekend was memorable.
A tribute edition for a change as it was a tough week for a lot of us in the community with the news of the passing of Bill Walton. He connected with so many on a level few people do, and his positive approach to life in general was and will remain inspiring. Sad news it is, but he would want all of us to remember the good he left us with and as he might say- "use it to fuel the amazing future we all have in front of us on this planet!" So here we go...
There was a lot to choose from for this week's Something to Watch. Bill was everywhere, and there are a ton of great stories circulating this week from those who knew him well. The 30 for 30 crew at ESPN did an amazing documentary on BIll's life, and each one of the 4 episodes is worth checking out, as it is an amazing look at his interesting life.
Again, tough to pick one thing for Something to Read, so I'll pick 2. The first is a quick story from me, written 2 years ago when I was on my long, strange trip between jobs. The story goes back a ways when I was working with Bill and what he did for me. The second is one of the best sports books you could ever read, written by the legendary David Halberstam about the Portland Trail Blazers. "The Breaks of the Game" is a look behind their difficult times in the 1979-80 season, and so much of it still rings true today.
There was so much to choose from for this week's Something to Listen To, and even though this choice is kind of a "watch", it was the best story I heard about Bill this week. Mike Breen shares a story that you didn't see coming, and it really takes you inside what a generous soul Bill was.
Here are the Top 10 jobs I saw this week, with the first 5 coming from our crew at CBS. We are ramping up things in our Nashville and Fort Lauderdale offices, so feel free to reach out to me here or email me at [email protected] for a direct path to those roles or any of the postings below.

I had to swap out the usual pic here for another icon. Bill was regarded as one of the best teammates ever, whether it was with the UCLA Bruins, who dominated the college hoops world (86-4 when he was there), or the '77 Blazers (75-15 and a title for the year and a half he was healthy), or my beloved '86 Celtics team (World Champs, going 82-18 including the playoff run). If you are looking for a teammate to help you get into and through the sports media world, we should talk. Please feel free to check out my website below and see how we can help each other. You can either DM me here or simply email me at [email protected] . The consultation call is free, and you might get a life lesson or 2 along the way.
Before heading out, I wanted to post a link to a charity Bill was involved in that you can donate to. They do some awesome stuff.
That's it for this week, a quick shout to those in the community who are starting something new (you know who you are!). Have a great weekend and thanks for your time here as always!
