Around the Bases 5/18
Welcome back! A special shout out to the community members her who are now college graduates! Know that the world isn't so scary- just don't fear the first step.
My graduation came over 30 years ago (!), and as I alluded to last week, I wasn't in a huge hurry to get my career going. The process of looking for work was so different. Some of you may remember trips to the office supply store for the "good" resume paper and envelopes to impress the hiring managers of the early 90s. I still have a few pages somewhere. Also somewhere, I have a notebook of every rejection letter I got that first summer. Why did I keep them? A little motivation from those went a long way as they all played a part in landing my first big break in the winter of '93. So know the efforts you are making will pay off at some point. Persistence is important, and if you need to save every "no reply" email (saved all the ones I got from job search number 2!) to get motivated, do it. Keep pushing relentlessly towards what you really want and all of the work you are doing to achieve that goal will get you there.
This week's Something to Watch is an older clip from an author I admire- Jen Sincero. She is also a renowned career coach and has so much to share that I feel is really helpful. Her story is pretty amazing and what she offers here may help you.
This week's Something to Read is a book from one of the best NFL coaches ever. Bill Walsh did an amazing job with the 49ers, taking them from laughing stock status to one of the greatest franchises in the league. Funny story- I actually spoke to him accidentally, answering a phone call in the ESPN newsroom. I picked up and he asked me if Marty Schottenheimer (another legendary coach) was in the newsroom. I said "No." and he said, "Could you tell him Bill Walsh called"? I said "Sure". After hanging up, I realized that I just had my own real-life ESPN commercial.
This week's Something to Listen To comes from another author, Hal Elrod. His "The Miracle Morning" is an awesome read and his podcast is pretty awesome too. Lots of great episodes, this one stood out.
Here are the Top 10 roles I saw this week- the first 5 are with our team at Paramount, as usual. There are several that are located in our office in Stamford with the digital sports crew at CBS Sports HQ. Reach out to me here on LinkedIn or email me at [email protected] for more, as I am a direct connection to the Stamford roles (especially the producer role listed first!), and I may have a connection at the other 5, I'm more than gad to help get you pointed in the right direction.
The NBA is looking for someone in this role for the right creative.
SNY has a lot going on right now, and I have. great connection there!

Writer/Editor/Producer of Sports, Fantasy Football, & Unscripted Content
1 年Wish they would open some of these positions to be remote or open to candidates in Los Angeles. Lots of talented media professionals here who are out of work due to the writer’s strike who would be extremely qualified.
