Around the Bases 2/8
Welcome back! Thanks as always for taking the time to read here- we are headed towards another milestone number for the community, so additional thanks for spreading the word about the newsletter.
A great friend and mentor of mine (more on him and his legacy next week) used to day to the room full of PAs at ESPN "Every game is the Super Bowl" in the middle of the summer when most of us were cutting run-of-the-mill baseball games. The words always ring true, but this week, with the big game coming, they are a little louder. The lesson? Go as big as you can, regardless of what the endeavor is. Putting all of your effort and energy into something will do one of 2 things: achieve what you are working towards, or not achieving it but knowing you put your all into it. Yes, easier said then done, but it gets easier the more you do it.
This week's Something to Watch IS from the crazy week out in Las Vegas. I saw this back and forth between a young journalist (and I mean, young) and Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. Jeremiah Fennel has been at it for a couple of years now (he's 11), and this was a pretty authentic moment from Monday night.
This week's Something to Read also has a Super Bowl theme to it. I posted this book a while back in this space, and many of you may already have it. Bill Walsh won 3 Super Bowls with the 49ers, and if you are a leader, "The Score Takes Care of Itself" should be on the bookshelf.
Funny side story here- Many years ago, I was in the old newsroom at ESPN and a random phone rang at one of the show pods. I picked it up and said hello. The voice on the other end responded, "Hello, is Marty Schottenheimer (an all-time coach) there?' I answered back, "No, Marty just went down to the set to do the show." The response blew my mind. "OK, can you tell him Bill Walsh called?" After a quick second I said, "Sure coach, I'll tell him." We wrapped the call politely and to this day, I still can't believe that happened. (Stay tuned here for the longer version of this next week).
This week's Something to Listen To is a best of episode from "Design Matters", a staple of mine hosted by Debbie Millman (a great follow here). Her guest in this episode is James Clear (another great follow), author of a book you should check out if you haven't already - "Atomic Habits". 2 very interesting people talking and it is worth your time.
Here are the Top 10 roles I saw this week, the first 5 are from our team at Paramount . Like the last few weeks, there were a ton of things to sift through, so know there is a lot out there. Please DM me here or email me at [email protected] for more on anything of what you see below.
There is no link for the first one, but our team in Connecticut is looking for a freelance Graphics Production Assistant to build and fire lower thirds and fullscreens using Ross Expression for our live studio productions.

Here are 2 great non-sports roles worth exploring.
Despite the massive amount of attention the game is getting this week, the news surrounding the streaming bundle of some of the sports giants out there deserves some attention. Rolling with the punches is critical to a long career in this field, and you have to be nimble enough to adjust your game plan when you are looking for what you want. If you need some assistance with this, we should talk. I have the industry knowledge, contacts and energy level needed to help you get things sorted out. Resume production, content reel reviews, social media profile edits and coaching sessions to beef up the other critical areas (strategy, contact list, etc). Feel free to check out my website below and see how we can help each other. You can email me at [email protected] to set up a free consultation call and see what your investment in yourself can produce.
Before we wrap, I have to pay some respects to great guy our industry lost this week. Larry Campbell was a PA/AP back in the day with me at ESPN before moving on to the NFL Network where he did some amazing work. Larry passed away recently (kudos to the NFL for a great tribute on a show earlier this week AND at the NFL Honors show on Thursday), and his friendship and influence did a lot for a lot of people. LC was one of the coolest guys I ever came across in my time in the business. His legacy he leaves is tremendous and he will be missed. See you all next week.
