Around the Bases 2/15
Welcome back! The post-Super Bowl hangover is here, but there is a lot buzzing around the sports world as we head towards the spring. Thanks for your time here as always, and I appreciate the word of mouth to help build the community here as we have 1200 subscribers in our reach.
It's been about a year since the passing of one of the all-timers, Barry Sacks, pictured here in the old newsroom at ESPN. I have this picture on the wall in my office and before I head to our newsroom, I always look at it and read the quote. I hear him saying it in his thick New York accent, and it gets my mind in the right place as I start my night. I think about Barry a lot- he was a great friend and unbelievably helpful to me and so many others in our field. So as you carve your way through your life, be it professional or personal, remember: "There are no rules". So I'll break a few today and dedicate this week's newsletter to him.
This week's Something to Watch is a tribute reel made last year after Barry's passing by one of his students at Quinnipiac University. Awesome to see the words and feelings of so many of his colleagues about the legacy he left behind.
This week's Something to Read is an article from way back in 1992 about the behind the scenes of SportsCenter, one of the many shows Barry had a huge impact on, and it would never be what is has been over the years or what it is today without his influence. He is one of the featured players in it, as are a bunch of people in the community here who might get a kick out of taking a trip back to a bygone era. It is a very cool look on how the show was made, and for those in the industry now, its a great thing to see just how much the business has changed.
This week's Something to Listen To is a great interview (it is a "watch" as well, but remember- there are no rules) featuring Barry with Bryan Fenley (a terrific announcer and radio host- worth a follow for those trying to get into the business). Great words here from Barry himself that still help me and most likely will help you too.
Here are the Top 10 roles I saw this week, with the first 5 coming form our team at CBS Sports. Barry was always posting jobs he saw here on LinkedIn, and once I got established here a few years ago, I thought I would do the same. The list you see here each week is in part, a tribute to Barry and what he did for so many.
Our graphics team in the Stamford office is looking for a PA to build (Ross Expression experience would help) and play out elements in our control room. We also have a lot going on in our Fort Lauderdale offices as well. Please DM me here or email me at [email protected] for more on any of the postings below.

The first listing here is from the great group at Quinnipiac University, where Barry taught and mentored so many graduate and undergrad students.
The twists and turns of the sports media world can leave so many with more than their share of questions about how to go about maneuvering a pathway to professional success. If you find yourself in this situation, we should talk. I have learned so much from so many industry leaders like Barry about how to excel in this field. From making your resume pop to producing your content reel better, I know I can get you closer to what you want. Whether it is in front of the camera or behind it, I have seen just about everything and my knowledge can help you in a number of ways. Feel free to check out my website below and see what path we can produce together to get the results you are looking for. Before we wrap, I just wanted to post a couple of links that are appropriate when remembering Barry and his legacy. The first is a charity for a great dog rescue operation that meant a lot to him. Check them out if you are looking for a furry fried, and here is the link to donate to their cause.
The second is a donation site for a scholarship at Quinnipiac in Barry's honor, the Barry Sacks Sports Journalism Scholarship. The perfect way to keep his legacy going at another place where he had a huge influence.
Thanks as always for your time here. If there are some people in your life you haven't spoken to in a while, reach out to them, even if it's only a quick DM or text (a Barry specialty). A wise man (guess who) once said in his big, booming voice- "Don't forget your friends!"
See you next week.
