Around the Bases 10/4
Welcome back! October already, and the winter sports are just about here (good luck to all of the hockey production teams out there who are starting this weekend). Lots going on in the business, I saw so many postings from all over the map. Thanks for your time- your participation means so much as I produce what I hope is a great visit every week.
I had a great experience this week talking to a class at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University . A huge shout out to their professor Elida Witthoeft for asking me, I got a lot out of it, and I hope the students did as well. The landscape in our business is ever-changing, and now more than ever those who are looking need to be as well-rounded as possible to carve your way into the industry. Don't fear a mistake or 2 along the way, just capitalize on your courage and put yourself into some potentially uncomfortable situations, and you will learn a lot about yourself and what you really want as you explore the many inroads to a career in this field.
This week's Something to Watch has been shared here a few times before, but always hits, and I used it in the talk I had above. Debbie Millman provides her view on the age-old battle between courage and confidence.
Change can be hard- learning new things that will replace old methods and habits isn't the way a lot of people and organizations are comfortable with. Fear of failing can often dominate the mindset when it comes to change. This week's Something to Read offers a few tips on change, and staring down the fears that can come with it, and heading into some new directions.
With the fun annual review season upon so many of us, I think this week's Something to Listen To has some insight on a very important aspect of life that I have seen (and been guilty of at times), which is advocating for yourself. It can be so easy to just swallow your pride and not speak up. This podcast episode from Jefferson Fisher (a great follow) is worth checking out by anyone who needs a little help in this area.
Here are the Top 10 roles I saw this week, with the first 5 coming from our team at CBS Sports. I can get you directly into the process for those jobs, and may have a way or 2 into the others listed below as well. Please DM me here or email me at [email protected] for more.

More from the PGA Tour here, with 2 new positions this week. I have some great connections there, and they are hiring for a lot of other roles.
I mentioned above the talk I had with the students at ASU. I got some great feedback on the experience and know I can deliver something for a class or a team you may be involved with. My story is pretty decent, and the way I tell it might get the right point across. If you are in need of a speaker/lecturer, we should talk. That also goes for anyone looking for some career guidance (resumes/content reel reviews/general coaching and advice). Please check out my website below and see how we can help each other. You can DM me here or email me at [email protected] for more. The consultation call is free.
It was a very tough week recently with Hurricane Helene and the damage it did. I wanted to post a place where you can donate to the relief fund and help.
Thanks again for being part of the team here. A quick shout out for those in the community who are starting something new (you know who you are!). See you next week!
