Army Pilots | How To Develop & Design Your Personal Brand: Mindset Shift

By beginning or graduating the Ascension Leadership Certification, you should have a great grasp on your Personal Story and gained confidence in Who You Are. Now it’s time for your Mindset Shift into the Civilian Aviation Community.

The Civilian World is just that, a different world that you haven’t spent much or any time in. They

1.     Speak a different language

2.     Have different purpose

3.     Have a different pace

4.     Have different processes

5.     Have different expectations &

6.     Have different outcomes

They want you to be More Passionate and Less Prideful. They want more of a Relationship with You than to have a history lesson of your life. They want to Connect with You. They want to be able to sit in the aircraft 8 hours a day and have a blast, no matter the mission.


There are 3 main mindsets I’ve seen:

1.     All Chest and No Heart – Overconfident

2.     Here to be a teammate, connect, learn, teach, and grow. – Relatable and accepting of guidance

3.     The “I can’t” or “I don’t know how.” – Not Enough Confidence

Which mindset are You Currently? ___________________________




In your Lifecycles as a Civilian Pilot, you need to prepare yourself for your choices. This is my P[10] formula:

1.     Place – What’s your Location?

2.     People – Who are you working with?

3.     Position – What’s your position?

4.     Pay – What’s your salary?

5.     Process – Easy, hard, short, long. What’s the process to get the job?

6.     Passion – What’s your passion level?

7.     Product – What’s the mission?

8.     Periphery – What’s the impact on your family life?

9.     Perfection – What is perfection for you and how can you best achieve it?

10. Predictable - What's the predictability of your evolving career path? Your work/life balance?


On a scale of 1-10 [1 being least and 10 being greatest] grade the importance of each of the P[10] for yourself.

By this point, your Mindset should be shifting but let’s not get ahead of ourselves because there’s much more to happen before you get to Interviews and Job Offers. Keep this up and you’ll get better as you continue the following lessons.
