Army Ants & The Smart Home Industry

Army Ants & The Smart Home Industry

Army Ants of the species Eciton hamatum, form living bridges to close gaps between where they are and where they must be. How do they know when an Ant bridge is in order? They just know and then they instantly go into execute mode. No emails, no meetings, no conference calls, no trade shows; they just make it happen.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of participating in a Smarter Homes & Connected Devices Summit meeting hosted by the ebullient & tough tech love dispensing Shelly Palmer. Shelly brought together an impressive group of individuals all connected to the Smart Home Space. Participants ranged from Vin Bruno (CEO, CEDIA) to Rachel Rothman (Chief Technologist, Good Housekeeping Institute), it was an eclectic group.

This impressive gathering of smart people didn't always share the same opinions or approaches but were unified in a common goal; to super serve the early majority, Smart Home Consumer. This esprit de corp was palpable throughout the day, the conversations and debates were authentic, intelligent and passionate. There are and will be will many additional conversation and collaborations as a result of this happening and I'm thankful to have been a part of it.

While settling in my Uber ride home, it dawned on me that despite the fact that Smart Home adoption for the masses isn't without some friction, the industry is self aware and working hard and fast on solutions. This arms race to find the best approaches to surprise & delight Smart Home Consumers will have a profound and positive effect on future purchase considerations.

It's a great time to be in the Smart Home business, join us in building bridges.

We agree Bill that is why the National Hardware show has created a Smart Home Section for the 2018 show in May in Vegas.

Great analogy Bill! The Smart Home Industry is growing and in my opinion, the name of the game is who can innovate faster and better than anyone else will come out on top. This requires innovators to deeply understand Smart Home consumers and how their needs/behaviors change over time. Thanks for sharing this thought provoking piece.
