Events such as this provide essential funds for the additional services we provide and enable us to create more projects internally and within the community. The majority of funding just puts the roof over people's heads without addressing the complex needs that go hand in hand with homelessness. Homelessness has risen ~70% on the Wirral alone in the last 5 years and this is on track to be double by 2020.
At Wirral Ark we have our fantastic hostel, Mary Cole House, a 27 en-suite room facility (two are palliative care rooms,) training centre and controlled drinking environment. We have a nurse led service that all homeless people can access, relieving pressure on A&E departments, and each client has a dedicated support worker to help them work through their mostly complex issues, be that mental health, addictions etc. Our nurses also increasingly deal with more complex health needs.
Our dinghies project is back up and running where our clients work together to renovate damaged mirror dinghies. We run activities such as cycling, yoga, art classes, helping to build esteem & skills. Our activities coordinator is starting next week and will create activity programmes internally and through partnerships with other organisations.
Our Grand Trunk supported housing provides semi-independent living with our 6 self-contained flats, all with designated support workers, and our Ark Angel project provides a combination of housing and support tailored to the needs of each tenant and enables them to live independently.
