Arizona State University Deploys ChatGPT Enterprise University Wide

This week Arizona State University announced that it has partnered with OpenAI and will deploy ChatGPT Enterprise throughout the university. ASU is the first university to partner with OpenAI. Starting in February, ASU will implement ChatGPT Enterprise to help with coursework, assist with research, and improve administrative efficiency. ChatGPT Enterprise includes access to GPT-4 with no usage caps and performance that’s two times faster than previous versions. The platform prioritizes user privacy and employs enterprise-grade security measures to safeguard user data.

This is exciting news especially considering that just a year ago, many universities and schools were banning the use of ChatGPT. For example, in January 2023, Sciences Po, one of France's top universities, announced a ban on ChatGPT and all other AI-based tools. According to Reuters, Sciences Po warned students that using ChatGPT could be grounds for expulsion from the university and even from French higher education as a whole.

"Learning is core to why so many users love ChatGPT. ASU continues to lead in innovation by integrating ChatGPT into its educational programs. We’re keen to learn from ASU and to work towards expanding ChatGPT's impact in higher education.”
Brad Lightcap, COO, OpenAI

ASU is committed to exploring potential uses of AI and has 19 centers, initiatives, and laboratories dedicated to exploring and activating AI models, resulting in over $340 million in active awards. Starting in February, ASU will invite submissions from faculty and staff to implement innovative uses of ChatGPT Enterprise. The three key areas of concentration include: enhancing student success, forging new avenues for innovative research, and streamlining organizational processes. The university plans to develop personalized tutors for students to help with learning and research.

“ASU recognizes that augmented and artificial intelligence systems are here to stay, and we are optimistic about their ability to become incredible tools that help students to learn, learn more quickly, and understand subjects more thoroughly. Our collaboration with OpenAI reflects our philosophy and our commitment to participating directly to the responsible evolution of AI learning technologies.”
Michael Crow, President, Arizona State University

Teaching and learning with generative AI

I anticipate that students, faculty, and staff at ASU will use AI to increase creativity and improve productivity. A year ago this week I published an article describing how ChatGPT could be used to help humans develop ideas, expand thinking, and consolidate multiple threads of knowledge into something cohesive. The article entitled, How The Evolution Of AI In Healthcare Aligns With Thomas Kuhn's Structure, demonstrates just one way that ChatGPT could be useful. This article and several others that I wrote about ChatGPT received such interesting feedback that I published an article with some of the comments entitled Top Comments About Generative AI and ChatGPT on February 12, 2023.

Prior to deploying ChatGPT, ASU formed a group of ASU thought leaders who shared a common vision of leveraging generative AI to drive innovation and improve the learning experience. In 2023, the group collaborated with leading experts to exchange knowledge and best practices, to help shape the future of generative AI in higher education. To support conversations about how faculty could leverage generative AI, ASU developed a self-paced course for faculty and staff entitled "Teaching and Learning with Generative AI". The modular course includes foundational information about generative AI as well as practical ideas for implementation into courses.

“By providing access to advanced AI capabilities, these tools allow individuals and organizations — regardless of size or resources — to harness the power of AI for creative and innovative endeavors. The goal is to leverage our knowledge core here at ASU to develop AI-driven projects aimed at revolutionizing educational techniques, aiding scholarly research and boosting administrative efficiency."
Lev Gonick, Chief Information Officer, Arizona State University
