TEMPE, AZ —The Arizona Coyotes are in "advanced stages" of discussions about playing their home games at Arizona State's new 5,000-seat hockey arena while the NHL team waits for a permanent home, GoPhnx.com reported on Thursday. The ASU arena in Tempe currently is under construction and set to open in December of this year.
Craig Morgan, a writer for GoPhnx.com, reported that the?Coyotes are negotiating?with ASU and OVC Facilities, which will manage the venue, on a three-year deal, with an option for a fourth year, to use the on-campus arena.?
The Coyotes are in the final year of their lease at Gila River Arena in Glendale, and the city of Glendale announced last summer that it would not renew the operating agreement with the franchise. The team has played at that arena since 2003.?
In September, the Coyotes?submitted a bid?to purchase two parcels of land in Tempe, where they would look to build a new arena and entertainment district, according to reports.?
Until then, the franchise would need an arena. NHL Deputy Commissioner?Bill Daly told GoPhnx.com that he "wouldn't rule it out," when asked about the possibility of the Coyotes playing at ASU.?

Let's go!
"While we have arena standards, we would approach the entire situation in a way intended to accommodate the club's needs in effectuating a successful transition to a new venue," Daly told GoPhnx.com. "While there may very well be some, I can't think of any hard and fast rules that couldn't be relaxed to accommodate what is necessary."
In November of 2020, ASU broke ground on its new $115-million, 5,000-seat arena that will be?located just east of Sun Devil Stadium. The arena also will be home to ASU wrestling and women's gymnastics and be a public venue for concerts, conferences, youth competitions and other events, the university said.?
The ASU hockey team currently plays its home games at Tempe's Oceanside Ice Arena.?
On Thursday, the Arizona Republic also reported that the Coyotes have shown interest in?playing at Chase Field, the retractable roof home of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The publication reported that the ballpark is a possible site for a one-time NHL Stadium Series game. However, Chase Field could also serve as a temporary home of the Coyotes as they wait for approval and construction of an arena in Tempe.
The Coyotes' arena situation previously made the news in December, when the Coyotes reportedly paid?$1.4 million?to the Arizona Department of Revenue after the city of Glendale had threatened to lock the team out of its arena due to unpaid taxes.
