Ariarne Titmus vs Katie Ledecky -'Race of the Century'

Ariarne Titmus smashed the 200m Freestyle record at the Australian Olympic Swimming Trials. She went against Mollie O'Callaghan, the former holder looking for another win. But on Wednesday evening, Titmus looked different as she dominated right from the dive, leaving no crumbs until the final touch. 1:52:23 is what the board read, scratching .025 seconds off of Mollie O'Callanghan's 1:52:48.

The Brisbane crowd went nuts to this, cheering on for the WR holder during the final lap. It was something that one would name as a nerve-bitting finish, thanks to the touchpads that set them apart. But what if we told you there's more to the eye? Yes, Ariarne Titmus is now the world's fastest swimmer in 200m freestyle, but her rivalry with Katie Ledecky has its significance.

It all started in 2019 when Ariarne Titmus went against Katie for the first time. The South Korean swimming community was eager for this matchup as Ledecky had never lost a race before. But it was the American athlete's sickness that allowed Titmus to overpower, let alone claim victory over the Olympic champion. A 62-second defeat was posted on the scoreboard as the 400m freestyle gold shined bright on Titmus's neck.

Fast-forward to 2020, when the world fought COVID-19, the two swimming queens had a different battle. One wanted revenge & the other looked to continue dominance. This time, history repeated itself. Ariarne Titmus destroyed Ledecky in the 200m & 400m freestyle, clinching two golds.

"Well, firstly, I think it's such a huge honor. I remember watching Katie swim in Rio. To think four years later that I would be the person that's battling it out with her is so crazy to me. But, you know, I know I've worked to get here. But I think that that does actually add a little bit more pressure." the Australian swimmer explained during an Olympics.com interview.

But the 23-year-old swimmer's coach had made a prediction which remained unfulfilled until the end of 2023. "Katie will be bringing her best. If you're not trying to break a world record there, you will fall behind. We're going to have to," coach Dean Boxall had said. However, it took a year for Titmus to reach there as the record fell during the 2023 Fukukoa Worlds.

And since then, the two swimming stars have been silently tackling their battles, gearing up for what fans call it 'race of the century.'

Is Ledecky better or Titmus?

This question might bother quite some of us. After all, it's a tough choice to make between the two queens, thanks to careers. For starters, Katie is an accomplished Olympian while Titmus is her best challenger. In terms of medals, the American outranks with 10 Olympic medals under her belt while Ariarne just holds 3. But then some might argue over the age factor, so that's a speculation for the community to make.

Last but not least, it is safe to say that Katie Ledecky is surely the long-distance queen but Ariarne Titmus is the one to look out for in the sprinting events. And of course, there's the 17-year-old Summer McIntosh to look out for!
