Rare Argyle Pink Diamonds Take Center Stage at Prestigious Australian Auction
A momentous event for diamond enthusiasts and collectors alike is unfolding in Australia. First State Auctions, a renowned Sydney-based auction house, has launched a highly anticipated sale featuring a stunning array of Argyle pink diamonds, including a particularly rare gem from the final tender of stones from the now-closed Argyle mine.
A Gem of Historic Proportions
Leading the auction is a 0.94-carat radiant-cut fancy intense pink diamond, boasting VS1 clarity. This exquisite stone, hailing from the 2021 Argyle Pink Tender—Rio Tinto’s Final Collection, carries a color grade of 6P on the Argyle Pink Diamond Colour Guide. The “6” represents the depth of the hue, while the “P” signifies pink as the dominant color. With an estimated value ranging from AUD 700,000 to 800,000 (USD 457,000 to 522,000), this diamond is more than just a gemstone—it's a piece of history.
A Glimpse into Argyle’s Legacy
The Argyle mine, nestled in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, was a global leader in the production of pink diamonds. From its beginnings in alluvial mining in 1983 to its transition to open-pit mining in 1985, and finally going fully underground in 2013, Argyle produced an astonishing 865 million carats of rough diamonds before its closure in 2020. The mine’s annual tenders, renowned for featuring the crème de la crème of each year’s production, became legendary in the diamond industry.
First Public Offering of Final Collection Diamond
This auction marks a historic first—the public offering of a diamond from Rio Tinto’s final collection. Ari Taibel, director at First State Auctions, expressed the significance of this event, stating, “We are honored to present this extraordinary diamond to the world. The rarity and historical significance of this Argyle Tender Diamond make it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The legacy of the Argyle Diamond Mine and its exceptional diamonds will forever be remembered, and this auction allows us to celebrate that legacy.”
