Argument about gun control.

Hypothetically, let's say that we have succumbed to political pressure and have banned the legal sale of all so-called assault weapons, among others the AR-15, M-16, AK-5, Ak-9, AK-47. Incidentally, by definition, an "assault" weapon is one capable of selective fire, able to switch between semiautomatic and burst/full automatic fire, which is not what it's being sold to the general public. What most people have is the single-shot version of these weapons, like the one used by the shooter in Parkland. But we're digressing.
Assuming that all of these sales are banned, what are we going to do about the many thousands of these weapons already in the hands of people? If we do create a public demand for this type of weapons, what are we going to do to prevent their illegal import, much like what has happened with illegal drugs in this country? Having worked for years in counter-drug operations, my guess is that the needle would not move one iota in the right direction. This being the case, are we really interested in making a difference, or is this just political huffing and puffing for the benefit of the few?
Just thinking aload...
