Argentina (1997.08-10): Months of Seismic Shake

In architecture, we don’t value what is freely available, even if it is so precious.

The experience in London was so transformative that I applied to almost every program I found later, with the idea of continuing my training at the postgraduate level outside Spain.

Without a doubt, I spent the most intense months of my life in Córdoba, Argentina. As far as academics are concerned, I had a stay at the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design (FAUD), National University of Córdoba (UNC).

I was very lucky to join a research project at the Workshop for Research and Design of Structures (TIDE), directed by Prof. Daniel Moisset, a true master.

During one of the seminars, the conversation was interrupted by somebody knocking on the door.

But there was no one absent…

After Professor Moisset gave his permission, a waiter appeared behind the door. He came from the bar across the street, tray in hand, perfectly uniformed. With impeccable manners, he asked us if we wanted coffee. He took note, and soon brought what we ordered.

The scene seemed normal for the others, but I was astonished. There we were, savoring a fresh espresso in a ceramic cup, while discussing about the optimization of shell STRUCTURES.

For me, this event was a revelation. The clear difference that exists between a society that enjoys life and others that just let it go.

It was also evidence of an incredible talent for turning seemingly limited circumstances into good opportunities. And the cafeteria from the neighborhood that enters the classrooms wasn’t the only one. Not at all. I will talk about other experiences in other articles.

Have you noticed that the architectures we admire, at any time in history and in any part of the world, are designed using 3 essential resources, available everywhere, at no cost?

We have seen already two: Light and Gravity. The third essential resource appears in the next article.

If you want to know about other of my activities in Argentina, the unexpected mistake that led to the incredible results of the research project, and more importantly, how to maximize your living or working conditions with the most important architectural resources, visit my website and subscribe to my newsletter:
