Area's top women-owned businesses

Cheers to another Friday, LinkedIn community. I'm blasting my playlist of female empowerment anthems a little louder than usual today.

Wondering why? Today we released our annual list of the Sacramento area's top women-owned businesses, ranked by 2023 revenue.

This year's list is especially impressive: With more than 50 entries, it's our largest-ever collection of women-owned businesses in the area, according to Data Reporter Mengyuan Dong .

Also, there's a new No. 1. Congratulations to HomeSmart ICARE Realty DRE#01937943 , which took the top spot. Otto Construction and SearchPros round out the top three.

Former post office will become restaurant, brewery

The future of a former post office in downtown Roseville has shifted from demolition and an urban infill project to adaptive reuse as a restaurant and brewery.

Chris Lemmon , an executive vice president at commercial real estate brokerage Newmark, said he represented the owners of nearby restaurant Old Town Pizza in their purchase of 320 Vernon St. this month.

Lemmon said Reese Browning and his son Mason plan to convert the 19,485-square-foot building into the new home for Old Town Pizza. The restaurant is currently in a building of about 12,000 square feet at 120 Church St. in Roseville's Old Town area. Read more


Amazon closing West Sacramento warehouse

亚马逊 plans to close one of its West Sacramento fulfillment centers, affecting more than 150 workers.

The online retail giant notified state regulators this week that it would be closing a grocery fulfillment center at 3640 Ramos Drive, Suite 110, later this year, impacting 159 employees.

In an emailed statement, Amazon spokesperson Sam Stephenson said the company decided not to renew its lease at the facility. Read more


Renaissance Tower headed to October auction

Months after going up for sale unpriced, Downtown Sacramento's Renaissance Tower skyscraper will instead go to an online auction.

LoopNet's Ten-X arm will host the auction for the 28-story building at 801 K St., which will be up for bids from Oct. 21 through 23.

Aspects of the listing suggest a challenging situation for the building, which is about 338,400 square feet and built in 1989. Read more


Smart Axe files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization

A local ax-throwing chain that's closed two of its area locations so far this year has filed for bankruptcy.

The Smart Axe, an entertainment venue chain that features multiple ax-throwing lanes and bars serving beer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization on Sept. 6, according to public records.?

The local chain opened its first location in Rancho Cordova in 2019 before expanding to include sites in Folsom, Modesto, Roseville, Davis and Midtown Sacramento.

Both the Davis and Rancho Cordova sites closed earlier this year, and the?Midtown location rebranded to a similar concept?after a former Smart Axe founder and owner left the business and retained ownership of the site. Read more


MLB denies report that A's move to West Sac is in jeopardy

Major League Baseball's Athletics pushed back Thursday on a media report suggesting a planned move to Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento is in jeopardy because of concerns over playing on artificial turf.

A statement from MLB said the team, currently wrapping up what would be its final season in Oakland, is still to play in the Sacramento region in 2025. Read more


Longtime Davis restaurant shutting down

With Seasons Kitchen & Bar set to close soon, the downtown Davis hotel where it operates is planning to transition to something new while it determines what will replace it.

The current restaurant has operated out of the space at 102 F St. since 2003. Seasons Executive Chef Yekaterina Balagian?recently told the Business Journal?that her team was notified by the operators of the hotel that the restaurant would be permanently closing.

Cosmin Nicula, general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn where the restaurant operates, said the hotel has decided to introduce a new in-house dining experience for its guests that will operate out of a dining space in its lobby. Read more
