Arctic Stories #8. The Bird of Happiness

Arctic Stories #8. The Bird of Happiness

Hello dear readers, today I will tell you the magical story of the Bird of Happiness from my region. Even two stories about it! You can see it at the top of this newsletter. Official saying goes that one local spotted that when fallen trees break, their trunks look like bird wings. Since then 'pomors' (people of my region) started making these beautiful birds from wood and use them as amulets for protection. Despite these birds being homemade, they are known to be magic and bring good miracles home.

When I was a kid, I was told differently. Once upon a time there was a little boy, who got ill. It was a cold winter, and there were no birds outside. He kept asking his dad for spring to come, so he could see the birds flying. But his dad couldn't do anything. Until one day he made a wooden bird and hang it over the fire. And the bird started flying over it. The boy was so happy, he was not ill anymore. Since then, these birds are called the Birds of Happiness and are told to protect happiness at home.

The Bird of Happiness represents my homeland and the Sub-Arctic region. Today I also want to share, how versatile Sub-Arctic is, through pictures. It is not just ice. It is rivers, rocks, forests and beaches. I hope this helps you feel what it feels like.

Till next time! And, please, take care of our beautiful planet in any way you can.
