Archetype Ventures, Tokyo-Based B2B Focused Venture Capital, Closes Third Fund with ¥15.5B, Bringing Total Assets Under Management to ¥24B

TOKYO, October 31, 2024 – Archetype Ventures announced today the final close of its third fund, Archetype Ventures III LP (“Fund III”), with ¥15.5 billion in committed capital. Fund III's successful close increases Archetype Ventures' total assets under management to ¥24 billion, reinforcing the firm's commitment to supporting B2B startups, particularly in the Seed and Early stages. Fund III has already deployed capital into 16 companies, with notable investments in companies such as Sotas, a vertical SaaS leader in the chemical industry; Haul, a next-gen recruiting SaaS; and Dioseve, a biotech startup in the ART (assisted reproductive technology) space.?

Accelerating B2B Investments with a New General Partner

Fund III will continue Archetype Ventures' established strategy of providing more than just financial backing to its portfolio companies. The firm aims to offer holistic support, working closely with startups to build businesses from the ground up. The addition of a new General Partner, Kyohei Mukaigawa , strengthens the team. Kyohei, joining co-founders Shumpei Fukui and Jun Nakajima , brings deep expertise in global B2B investing, drawing on his experience from a trading company and U.S.-Japan venture capital funds.

Why Archetype Ventures Focuses on Seed Plus Stage

Archetype Ventures is particularly committed to the Seed Plus stage, a critical phase where many startups face challenges transitioning from product development to revenue generation. As seen in other markets like the U.S., startups with excellent products but slower momentum struggle to raise Series A funding. This trend is accelerating in Japan, and Archetype Ventures is well-positioned to support these companies. The team’s diverse backgrounds, which include experience in startups, large corporations, and government, uniquely enable them to offer valuable insights and practical assistance to their portfolio companies.

Building on Past Successes with Increased Investment Per Company

While the size of Archetype Ventures' funds has grown—Fund I launched at ¥1 billion, Fund II at ¥6 billion, and now Fund III at ¥15.5 billion—the number of companies supported per fund has remained stable. However, the firm is allocating larger follow-on investments per company in Fund III, ensuring that its portfolio companies have the resources to scale effectively. Archetype Ventures’ long-term commitment to startups through hands-on support in areas like sales strategy, organizational development, and financing is central to its investment philosophy.

Commitment to B2B Startups and Diverse Sectors

Fund III will continue to focus on the B2B space, with a particular emphasis on Enterprise AI, SaaS, healthcare, sustainability, and deep tech. The fund aims to invest ¥500 million to ¥1 billion per company, including follow-on capital. Archetype Ventures' unique advantage lies in its close relationships with entrepreneurs and its ability to assist with everything from sales efforts to strategy development.

Diverse Team with a Strong Entrepreneurial Spirit

Archetype Ventures prides itself on having a team with a wide range of experiences, from entrepreneurship and corporate strategy to government and IT. This diversity brings fresh perspectives and enables the team to remain agile in a rapidly changing market. As Fund III reaches its final close, the firm looks forward to accelerating its investments in promising startups across various sectors.
