Principal Nyree Dixon asked me last school year if Hidden Gems Archery can conduct an enrichment program mid-day at her school. You know, I am often up to new and unique things but this one sort of floored me. Like, really? A day archery program? We were so used to doing after-school programs. But, the key to initiating this program was when we had a Try Archery event for Family Night, Principal Dixon saw students waiting patiently to participate in the activity. She said,"They waited so patiently!" And Principal Dixon further asked the question of if they can wait patiently to try archery for one day, can this sport teach students patience and focus in their day-to-day if we run it as a long-term program? I felt the answer will be, "Yes!" So, we decided to work with one another for the 2017 - 2018 school year.
So, one of the goals for this mid-day archery school program will be to teach students patience and focus. And with these two characteristics, we believe students will learn to achieve the school's academic goals and they will also learn self-efficacy (Granted they do not know what self-efficacy means, but we do).
There are a lot more days of archery to go at PS 12, and I know this Principal will be successful in changing the lives of these students because she is willing to step outside the box of normal activities and give us a chance. And for that, I am grateful.
This is wonderful!
