Archbishop Kaziimba Mugalu Rallies Support For Cathedral Building

Yesterday, St. Philip’s and Andrew’s Cathedral in Mukono was filled with joy and thanksgiving as Mukono Diocese celebrated 40 years since its formation in 1983. The event attracted hundreds of Christians, serving and retired bishops, clergy, and other dignitaries, with the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, as the main celebrant.

In his sermon, Archbishop Kaziimba congratulated the diocese on its 40-year journey, reflecting on the biblical significance of the number 40 as a period of testing and transformation.

“As we celebrate this milestone, let us remember God’s faithfulness. Forty years symbolize a journey of growth and renewal,” he said.

The Archbishop urged Christians to contribute to the construction of the new cathedral building, emphasizing the importance of building both physical structures and nurturing human values.

“Our focus should not only be on erecting buildings but also on fostering love and unity among our communities,” he added.

In line with World AIDS Day, the Archbishop called on Ugandans to support people living with HIV/AIDS and to fight against stigma and discrimination. He cautioned those living with the virus to refrain from deliberate actions that may harm others.

Bishop of Mukono Diocese, Rt. Rev. Enos Kitto Kagodo, expressed gratitude for the journey of the diocese over the years, acknowledging the contributions of its leaders and faithful members.

“God has brought us this far, and we celebrate the milestones achieved together as a community of believers,” he remarked.

As part of the celebrations, Mama Ruth Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo was declared a canon in honor of her foundational role in the diocese and the wider Church of Uganda. Her canonization is scheduled for December 15, 2024.

The service also witnessed generous contributions from various archdeaconries, friends, and well-wishers, raising over UGX 100 million in cash and pledges toward the new cathedral construction.
