Is Archaeology Slowing Down Your Timelines?

Is archaeology slowing down your timelines? Are you in Oil and Gas, Forestry, Mining, Infrastructure or Land Development?

If you're in any of these industries, you know that engaging an archaeologist is essential both to do your ethical and social duty, but also meet your legislative requirements. Engaging the right archaeologist will help avoid delays, both immediately and down the line. But what's the best way to do that? Here are some tips:

1. Engage the archaeologist at the same time you engage the initial planning and design team. Find the known archaeological issues before you spend time and money solidifying your plans. Avoidance of the issue in the first place is your best way to protect the resource.

2. Get a desktop review by an archaeologist to plan around potential issues. This is especially important for large scale jobs.

3. Make sure your archaeologist is more than just an archaeologist. They must be an advocate for your timeline while still protecting the archaeological resource. These two things should never be in conflict with each other. Good archaeology is about finding a solution, not about punishing the client.

4. Ensure they are using the latest data collection methods and technology. Instantaneous data collection and sharing can mean your team receives the areas to avoid or mitigate quicker and thus prevent time lost to planning after the fact.

5. Make sure your archaeologists are planning the solution in the field, not after. Assess the possible solutions when out in the field, as opposed to coming back again.?This will prevent additional mobilization costs, field costs and endless frustration.

6. Engage the First Nation communities early on, independent of the archaeologist as well as in conjunction with the archaeologist. We are privileged to be working on the lands that they have protected for generations. Collaboration is key to being successful in any project. The local and Traditional knowledge that these communities hold can only benefit your project.

We specialize in helping our clients avoid delays due to archaeology. We're more than just archaeologists—we're advocates for your timeline while still protecting the resource. And we use the latest technology for data collection and sharing, so you can avoid potential problems before they happen.
