At the Arcadia Invitational, Lake Oswego's Mia Brahe-Pedersen (again) breaks the 100-meter state record for Oregon.
At the Arcadia (Calif.) Invitational on Saturday night, Mia Brahe-Pedersen repeated her performance. At the premier competition that draws many of the best track and field athletes in the nation, the Lake Oswego junior phenom shattered her state record in the 100-meter dash. She took first place in the 100 and 200 Invitational races.
Amare Harlan of Fremont, the state champion of Utah, and Reign Redmond, the state champion of California, were in the 100-meter field that Brahe-Pedersen destroyed. By winning the race in 11.17 seconds, she broke the record she had set in the preliminary heats of the U.S. Under-20 national championships at Hayward Field in Eugene last summer.
To take over the national lead in the competition, Brahe-Pedersen defeated Harlan and Redmond by 0.39 seconds, which is a larger difference than from second to seventh place. Her performance put her in a tie for thirteenth place overall on the national rankings.
Later in the evening, she returned to win the 200 in a season-best 23.01, just.001 off the joint state record she and Margaret Johnson-Bailes own. Josie Donelson, a classmate, came in third place in the Invitational 400 with a timing of 55.00 seconds, moving her up to ninth place on the state's all-time record. She also served as the anchor for the fourth-fastest time in state history, the 4x400 relay team with Brahe-Pedersen, Riley Ha, and Marina Turpen, which finished third in 3:50.27.
