Arbour Month & Africa's SDG Challenge
September is Arbour month in South Africa??
In September, we celebrate Arbour Month - an important time dedicated to promoting tree planting and environmental conservation. This year's theme, "Celebrating 30 Years of Freedom: Promoting Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Forest Management", aligns with the country's celebration of 30 years of democracy.?
The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Bernice Swart, participated in the planting of trees to mark the start of National Arbor Month. Some of the trees planted have many benefits, including being used for medicinal purposes. According to SABC News, the Minister said her department wants to go the extra mile and surpass the President’s target of planting 10 million trees in South Africa. This #10MillionTrees campaign, seeks to combat deforestation and enhance biodiversity across the country.??
Trees play a crucial role in combating climate change, improving air quality, and supporting biodiversity. Planting indigenous trees can help restore ecosystems, prevent soil erosion, and contribute to food security. Beyond environmental benefits, participating in Arbor Month also fosters community involvement and honours the cultural heritage of South Africa (September is also Heritage month).??
We encourage you to explore opportunities to contribute to tree planting and conservation efforts. You can discover various organisations and initiatives that align with your interests and make a meaningful impact on the environment.?
The SDG Challenge in Africa: Continent not likely to meet SDG targets?
In a recent article published on Daily Maverick, the pressing dilemma facing Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is brought into sharp focus. As the world prepares for this month’s United Nations (UN) Summit of the Future, the continent is at a crossroads, grappling with whether to accelerate progress, extend timelines, or potentially abandon certain targets altogether. With just six years until the 2030 deadline, the continent will most likely not meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).?
Africa is on track to achieve only 10 out of the 144 measurable SDG targets by 2030. As many as 106 targets require accelerated action, while 28 are moving in the wrong direction. While this challenge isn’t unique to Africa, globally, only 15% of the SDGs are on?track, with nearly half off course.??
The article also suggests that how Africa navigates this dilemma will significantly impact its sustainability efforts and overall development trajectory. There’s a call for innovative approaches to overcome barriers and ensure that the SDGs remain a viable and inspiring framework for the future.?
For those involved in investment strategies, corporate responsibility, and community development, these insights can offer valuable context for understanding the evolving landscape of sustainable development in Africa.
