As the group continued their tasks, they noticed the kid sitting alone at the table, his gaze distant and unfocused. Carl and Rita exchanged a concerned glance before making their way over to him, their footsteps echoing softly against the floor.
"Hey there, kiddo," Carl greeted gently, his voice warm with compassion. "You hungry? We've got some soup here, and it's mighty tasty."
?The boy remained silent, his eyes fixed on the tabletop as if lost in thought. Rita reached out a hand, placing it gently on his shoulder in a gesture of comfort. "It's okay, sweetheart," she said softly. "We're here for you."
Slowly, almost hesitantly, the boy reached out for the bowl of soup in front of him. He took a sip, then another, the warmth and nourishment of the broth slowly easing the tension in his shoulders.
Carl and Rita exchanged a small smile of relief as they watched the boy eat, their hearts swelling with empathy for the young soul who had endured so much.
"Here you go, folks," Carl announced cheerfully, his voice carrying across the room. "Courtesy of Rita's famous soup. Enjoy!"
As the others eagerly accepted their servings, Jake glanced over at Carl with a knowing look. "She's good with kids," he remarked quietly, his tone tinged with admiration.
Carl nodded in agreement, a fond smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, she's got a way with them," he admitted. "But it makes you wonder, doesn't it? Is it right to bring kids into a world like this?"
Jake's brow furrowed in contemplation as he considered Carl's question. "It's a tough call," he admitted, his voice thoughtful. "On one hand, you want to give them a chance at a normal life. But on the other hand, you worry about what kind of world they'll inherit."
Carl sighed, his gaze drifting to the young faces scattered throughout the room. "We're too old for kids ourselves," he mused. "But I can't help but hope that the younger ones, like you, Jake, will find a way to make it work. Maybe they'll be the ones to build a better future with Remidance or just the old old way.
Jake nodded solemnly, his expression reflecting the weight of Carl's words. "I guess we'll just have to take it one day at a time," he said quietly. "But for now, let's focus on keeping everyone safe and getting through this together."
With a shared nod of agreement, Carl and Jake returned their attention to the group, their minds buzzing with thoughts of the uncertain future that lay ahead. But amidst the turmoil and doubt, there was a glimmer of hope—a belief that even in the darkest of times, humanity had the resilience to endure, and the courage to strive for a brighter tomorrow. As Jake observed the interactions around him, his mind drifted to thoughts he had long pushed aside—the notion of starting a family in a world ravaged by chaos seemed utterly absurd. The responsibilities of parenthood weighed heavily on his shoulders, and the thought of bringing a child into such uncertainty filled him with a sense of unease.
But it wasn't just the prospect of parenthood that troubled him. There was also the matter of his relationship with Sarah—a connection that had always simmered beneath the surface but had never fully blossomed into something more. Every time they seemed to inch closer to acknowledging their feelings for each other, something always seemed to intervene—a crisis, a distraction, or their own insecurities holding them back.
Jake sighed inwardly, the weight of his unresolved emotions pressing down on him like a leaden cloak. He knew he needed to confront his feelings for Sarah, to address the lingering tension between them before it became too late. But the timing never seemed right, and the fear of rejection loomed large in his mind.
His thoughts were interrupted by Danny's frustrated voice, pulling him back to the present. Danny's puzzled expression and exasperation with the power unit reminded Jake of the challenges they faced in maintaining their makeshift sanctuary.
It was then that Rachel spoke up, her admission taking them all by surprise. Her background as an engineer, once concealed beneath layers of silence and uncertainty, now emerged as a beacon of hope amidst their struggles.
"I used to work for a local dam construction," Rachel confessed, her voice tinged with nostalgia. "I know a thing or two about power units and electrical systems. Maybe I can help."
Jake felt a surge of gratitude towards Rachel, her expertise offering a glimmer of hope in their darkest hour
Perhaps, he thought, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, there was still room for hope—for new beginnings, for connections forged in adversity, and for the courage to face whatever challenges lay ahead. And as they worked together to unravel the mysteries of the power unit, Jake dared to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was still a chance for them to carve out a future worth fighting for. As Danny and Rachel headed back to the room, they each grabbed a cup of Carl's heartfelt soup, savoring the warmth and nourishment it provided. Jake offered his thanks to Carl, taking a portion of the soup with him as he made his way down the corridor.
Nodding to Sam who was on his usual tower watches as they passed in the hallway, Jake noted the calm expression on Sam's face as he reported nothing out of the ordinary with the sea. Their brief exchange conveyed a sense of solidarity and understanding, a silent acknowledgment of the challenges they faced together.
Descending into the lower levels of the rig, Jake found Sarah still hard at work, her focus unwavering as she analyzed samples under the microscope in the torch light. Impressed by her dedication and expertise, Jake settled beside her, engaging her in conversation as they shared a moment between each other.
Their conversation flowed easily, punctuated by moments of laughter and shared understanding. Despite the seriousness of their situation, they found solace in each other's company, an escape from the chaos that surrounded them.
As Jake handed Sarah a cup of soup, she accepted it gratefully, taking a moment to savor the comforting warmth of the broth. Just as they settled back into their conversation, a sudden cheer erupted from the room above them, accompanied by the welcome glow of the overhead lights flickering to life.
The sound of celebration filled the air, a tangible expression of relief and hope as the darkness receded and the promise of a new day dawned. And as they basked in the glow of the newly illuminated room, Jake couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of optimism for the future, knowing that together, they could overcome whatever challenges lay ahead.
As the power surged back on, Sarah's attention was immediately drawn away from her half-eaten soup, her focus shifting to the computer screens that flickered to life. A sense of excitement filled the air as she and Jake exchanged a quick hug, their shared accomplishment fueling their determination to delve into the newly accessible data.
?
Side by side, they poured over the files displayed on the screens, their conversation flowing as they discussed various topics ranging from the rig's infrastructure to their own personal experiences. Jake seized the opportunity to slowly hint at Carl's earlier conversation, hoping to gauge Sarah's reaction.
"So, Carl was talking about some interesting stuff earlier," Jake remarked casually, his eyes scanning the screen for any reaction. "About the future and... well, about kids."
Sarah's brow furrowed in confusion, her curiosity piqued. "Oh? What did he have to say?" she inquired, her interest evident as she turned to face Jake.
Before she could respond, however, Jake's attention was suddenly drawn to a particular file that prompted for a password. His fingers hovered over the keyboard, tapping away as he attempted various combinations without success. Sarah watched intently, her mind racing with possibilities.
As they continued to try different passwords, Sarah's gaze wandered around the cluttered desk, her eyes landing on various unicorn-themed items scattered about—a pencil stand adorned with unicorns, a drawer with unicorn stickers, and even a unicorn-shaped stress ball.
"Hey, Jake," Sarah interrupted, her voice filled with determination. "Try 'unicorns.'"
Jake entered the word with a sense of skepticism, but to no avail. The file remained locked. Sarah's disappointment was palpable as she sighed in frustration.
"Wait, no... scratch that," she corrected herself, a hint of excitement creeping into her voice. "Try 'pony.'"
With a sense of curiosity, Jake entered the new password, and to their delight, the file unlocked, revealing a trove of valuable information that could potentially hold the key to their survival.
As they delved deeper into the contents of the file, their spirits lifted, buoyed by the realization that they were one step closer to uncovering the mysteries of the rig and securing their future. And amidst the chaos and uncertainty that surrounded them, they found solace in the simple joy of triumphing over adversity, united in their determination to persevere against all odds.
As Jake clicked on one of the videos, a sense of dread settled in the pit of his stomach. The screen flickered to life, revealing a group of scientists surrounding a young boy, who was screaming in agony as they held him down. One of the scientists injected a solution into the boy's arm, and Jake's heart sank as he realized the horror of what he was witnessing.

With a heavy heart, Jake skipped forward, unable to stomach the gruesome scene unfolding before him. Beside him, Sarah tried to look away, her stomach churning with nausea, but her curiosity compelled her to keep watching.
As the video continued, they were met with a scene of unimaginable brutality—a terrific display of experimentation, as the scientists attached live body parts of other creatures to the boy's mutilated form. Sarah gasped in horror, her hand flying to her mouth in disbelief.
"Oh my god," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "This is... this is barbaric."
Jake felt a surge of anger and revulsion as he watched the atrocities committed against the defenseless boy. Unable to bear the sight any longer, he paused the video, his heart heavy with sorrow.
"It's okay, Sarah," Jake said softly, his voice tinged with sympathy as he reached out to comfort her. "We don't have to watch anymore. It's too much."
Tears welled up in Sarah's eyes as she leaned into Jake's embrace, her heart aching for the innocent lives lost in the name of science. Together, they sat in silence, their minds reeling from the horrors they had witnessed.
In that moment, Jake realized the depth of Sarah's compassion and empathy, and he vowed to do everything in his power to protect her from further pain. With a heavy sigh, he shut off the video, the weight of their shared trauma hanging heavy in the air.

As they retreated from the darkness of the computer screen, Jake and Sarah found solace in each other's presence, united in their determination to uncover the truth and put an end to the atrocities being committed on the rig.
As Jake and Sarah stepped into the mess room, they were greeted by a symphony of laughter and chatter that warmed their hearts. Carl and Rita sat at one end of the table, engaging the kid in a playful conversation that had him giggling with delight.
"So, young fella, what do you say we teach you a few tricks?" Carl said with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, a grin spreading across his face.
The kid's eyes widened with excitement as he nodded eagerly, his enthusiasm infectious.
Rita chuckled fondly, her eyes sparkling with amusement as she leaned in closer to the kid. "Alright then, let's start with something simple," she suggested, her tone gentle and encouraging.
As Carl and Rita proceeded to demonstrate a series of playful coin tricks, the kid watched with rapt attention, and then repeating the same with his laughter ringing out in the room. Jake and Sarah couldn't help but smile at the heartwarming scene unfolding before them, grateful for the moment of joy amidst the chaos.
"You're a natural, kid!" Carl exclaimed, clapping the boy on the back with pride.
The kid beamed with pride, his eyes shining with newfound confidence.
As Rachel, Imani, Sam, and Danny celebrated around the table, their laughter and jokes filled the room with an infectious energy.
Imani raised his glass of water in a toast, his eyes sparkling with joy. "To the lights coming back on! Finally, we can see each other's faces without squinting in the dark."
Sam grinned, nodding in agreement. "I'll drink to that! No more stumbling around like blind rats."
?
Danny chuckled, raising his own glass. "Cheers to not having to rely on flashlights anymore. My fingers were starting to cramp!"
Rachel smiled and raised her glass, remembering her guy who fell off the board “To friends we have lost!"
Imani nodded, his expression thoughtful. "It's the little things that make all the difference. Let's not take this moment for granted."
As they clinked their glasses together in celebration, the room filled with a sense of camaraderie and gratitude. In that moment, they were reminded of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of unity in the face of adversity.
As Sarah and Jake settled down beside Harold and Dorty, they were greeted with warm smiles and open arms, instantly feeling at ease in their presence. Dorty, ever the lively conversationalist, broke the silence with a cheerful greeting.
"Well, hello there, you two!" she exclaimed, her eyes twinkling with delight. "Welcome to the party. Pull up a chair and join in the fun!"
Jake grinned appreciatively, nodding in agreement. "Thank you, Dorty. It's nice to be here with such wonderful company."
Harold nodded in agreement, his wise eyes reflecting a lifetime of experiences. "Indeed, it's always a pleasure to have new faces join me. I’ve been through quite a lot, but it's moments like these that remind us of the importance of companionship."
Sarah smiled warmly, feeling a sense of belonging. Dorty nodded enthusiastically, her enthusiasm infectious. "Absolutely! Life is all about cherishing the little moments, isn't it? Like sharing a meal with good friends, or laughing until your sides hurt."
Jake glanced at Sarah, a gentle encouragement in his eyes. "Let's make the most of this moment, Sarah," he said softly. "Let's cherish the laughter, the stories, and the connections we share with each other."
Sarah met Jake's gaze with a grateful smile, feeling a sense of warmth and appreciation wash over her. "You're right, Jake," she replied, her voice filled with sincerity. "Let's savor every moment, and treasure the bonds we've formed here."
?
And so, surrounded by the laughter and camaraderie of their newfound friends, Sarah and Jake immersed themselves in the delightful conversation, grateful for the simple joys of companionship and community. In that moment, they realized that true happiness could be found in the company of those who touched their hearts and souls.
Sarah couldn’t help but watch Jake constantly look at the windows. “What are you thinking Jake?”. Jake replied “I can't help but feel like these lights can be a blessing and a curse lights like this in the pitch-dark night across the ocean may seem like a tempting beacon.” Sarah jumped up – “Guys, I think we should shut the lights off, this can be too dangerous.” Danny interrupts “I’m sorry you wanted us to get the lights on and now you want it off?”. Sam intervenes “She is right, we can use the lights for the inner corridors in the day when it is bright. But we have to shut off the outer lights and put paper, cloth or any paint on the outer windows so the light remains trapped inside.
They all get up and get right at it. “Well, that didn’t take long.” Jake smiles and says “it is going to be ok Sarah, we need to be prepared. I'll think of a plan”. The outer lights go off and the rig becomes almost invisible across the horizon. To be Contd
