NFT NYC Starts to Mature

Hello Reflection readers!

I thought I'd kick off this month's Web3 Reflections with a look back at one of the biggest NFT events on the calendar, NFT NYC.

I wasn't there myself but had a couple of team members at the satellite events as well as friends and connections reporting back to me on the main event.

The conference was a bit different from last year.

For starters, we're slap-bang in the middle of a bear market.

Last year's event was just the start of the downturn and therefore had much hype, positivity and showmanship from both projects and those interested in buying.

This year could be seen as stripped back, more intense, and for the builders.

Last year had around 15,000 in attendance.

This year had around 6,000.

Last year PFP projects and startups splashed the cash and blew their marketing budgets on razzle and dazzle.

This year was reined in and much more based around builders going into details about what they've created and where they want to be...with true use case.

It's maturing and so is the industry.

I only see this as a good thing and look forward to next year when I predict there will be a return to industry stability and interest in innovations that work with web3 in the background instead of at the forefront.

Let's wait and see if I'm right.

This month is Art, Music, and Fashion

Art

Beeple, the artist that many people credit with kicking off NFT's popularity hosted another event at his recently opened NFT studio in South Carolina.

The second Beeple Studios event, took place on?April 29th, 2023, during the Art Charleston festival and highlighted a curated list of new and returning artists and their works with Beeple hosting an 'on the spot' performance.

I'm interested in seeing how the Beeples Studio develops over time and if it becomes a hub for NFT enthusiasts and artists the world over. If success does take hold, I'm hoping this will bring more interest in the plethora of other NFT real-life galleries and bring about more collaborations with digital marketplaces and platforms to showcase and sell artwork.

Music

The credit card company Mastercard have now opened up their platform and initiative to help Web3 musicians access resources to boost their careers.

This includes a 'Mastercard Music Pass' that is currently free to mint allowing artists to access the program and providing them with AI technology and educational tools as well as advice from Web3 mentors.

I believe we'll be seeing more companies diving into initiatives like this with Mastercard setting the trend.

This could be a fantastic place for musicians to be educated on the benefits of web3 and how it can help them take control of their careers and music through blockchain technology.

Fashion

The web3 'shoe wars' are heating up as both Nike and Adidas release new projects and features pretty close to each other.... both with VERY different approaches.

Adidas recently released ALTS, A Web3 loyalty program with avatars and a bored ape named Indigo.

The NFT part is touted to be a dynamic NFT which will evolve based on your decisions and engagement.

HOWEVER... the brand has built around more of a 'pay to play' system around ownership, meaning you have to own and burn a previously acquired NFT - an Adidas originals 'avatar'.

Nike recently revealed their '.Swoosh' web3 platform and the next part of their NFT journey.

This was through an upcoming release for its first collection of digital sneakers.

Dubbed Our Force 1 (OF1), the new collection is “a tribute to the first 50 years of Nike"

The drop is to be pretty reasonably priced at $19.82 per NFT.

Flex your web3 script-writing prowess with Adimverse

For those of you that know Rob McElhenney of sitcom, 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' fame, you may also know he likes to take business risks.

Some of you may have seen the series about the Welsh football team Wrexham AFC he purchased with fellow Hollywood starlet Ryan Reynolds.

But many wouldn't have heard of his Web3 venture, Adim.

The Adimverse is a community of storytellers, fans, and friends working together to create and own the next generation of content in order to build a more inclusive future for entertainment.

They do this through NFT access to a discord platform where participants work together on character and script ideas with Rob and his team using their connections to see where they can grow them in the industry.

The great news is that anyone involved in character creation can profit from anything used.

Check out more details on the Adimverse website.

AI Teaches Web3

This month I'm handing over the reins to Chat GPT to handle the web3 learning section of the newsletter.

I gave Chat GPT a test.

I asked it to explain Web3 to the following:

  • A Child
  • A Teenager
  • An Adult.

The prompt was:

"Please explain Web3 to a child/teenager/adult"

You can check out the answers in this completely unedited document I created in this LinkedIn post.

Some of my takeaways:

  • The explanations give a good basic overview but fail to go in-depth (further prompting may help with this)
  • I still think a child would struggle with the definition but it is a good attempt.
  • The longest explanation was for teenagers. When I tried the prompts again, the longest definition was once again for teenagers. Why is this? Does information out there suggest teenagers need longer and more in-depth explanations?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and how, in the future, AI can be used as a tool for teaching.
