April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

Northeast Kansas Animal Welfare Foundation is inviting everyone to join us in observing Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. This nationwide monthlong recognition of a sad reality in our society is intended to generate awareness for the suffering of neglected pets and raise funds for helping rehabilitate those pets. We invite you to reaffirm your commitment to being a voice for animals in need.?

As stewards of care for domesticated pets, we have a responsibility to ensure that they are treated with kindness, dignity, and compassion. Cruelty towards animals persists throughout our neighborhoods, staining the fabric of our society. Whether it's a chained dog suffering through brutal winters, abandoning a litter of kittens, or participating in dog-fighting, the spectrum of cruelty is vast and problematic. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month serves as a poignant reminder of the work that still needs to be done to protect the voiceless and vulnerable.?

Education and awareness lies at the heart of prevention. Teaching empathy and compassion from a young age can foster a culture of kindness that extends into adulthood. By educating ourselves and others about proper pet care we can cultivate a society that values their welfare.?

Individual actions, no matter how small, can collectively make a substantial impact. Whether it's volunteering at animal shelters, adopting pets instead of buying them, or simply being mindful of the impact of our choices on animals, each one of us has the power to make a difference. Most importantly: if you spot something, say something. You should always report the mistreatment of animals to local authorities.?

Here are a few ways that you can make a difference this month and throughout the year:?

Make a donation to NKAWF?

The Cruelty Stoppers Fund administered by Northeast Kansas Animal Welfare Foundation is restricted for the use of raising awareness about animal cruelty issues, providing cash rewards for reporting abuse, and assisting law enforcement and animal welfare agencies.?

Your financial support, no matter the size, makes a tremendous difference right here in our area. NKAWF is now using the Cruelty Stoppers Fund to issue micro-grants to organizations that help rehabilitate animals during law enforcement investigations. In the first week of launching these grants we were able to send aid to Prairie Paws Animal Shelter to help with a case involving a dog in Franklin County and we provided 2 weeks worth of hay to Rainbow Meadows Rescue in Junction City for their work in helping law enforcement with abused and neglected horses. This type of support is not possible without your support. You can donate conveniently and secretly online at www.nkawf.org/donate.?

Host an Informational Session?

We're happy to discuss our work with schools, churches, networking groups, clubs, or even individuals and families that might open up their homes to host an informational session.?

Volunteer at a Local Shelter or Rescue?

There are several worthy shelters and rescues in need of your volunteer abilities. Take time to research the organizations in your area and find one that speaks to your heart. Animal sheltering and adoption agencies are always in need of more folks to help clean, socialize pets, walk dogs, and so much more. April is a great time to start your volunteering journey.?

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month serves as a call to action for us all. It's a time to raise awareness, advocate for change, and stand up for the voiceless. Let us use this month as an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to building a community where animals are treated with the compassion and respect they deserve.?
