The summer is almost upon us.
Spring is here and we are so grateful for the warm weather and all that brings with it.
So while things are hotting up, let’s talk about the next big hot topic in the world of recruitment - Transferable skills.
Everyone has skills, everyone has something they can contribute to the workplace.?
However, how often do these get overlooked when in fact they are infinitely transferable to a huge variety of industries, sectors, and roles?
Transferable Skills
We work in recruitment and we see the same issue crop up again and again - too much emphasis on experience only.
Don’t get us wrong, experience is vitally important. But what is often overlooked are the skills learnt in that experience and (most importantly) how they can be transferred to the role you’re hiring for.
The issue is that specific experience is not always possible to achieve. The use of “X amount of years doing [INSERT SPECIFIC FUNCTION HERE]” does not necessarily translate to a successful recruitment result.?
This can lead to a lot of headaches and a lot of wasted money in recruitment efforts. Why? Because a lot of technical skills and experience can be taught and learnt on the job.
However, the skills learnt and crafted from experience outside of a specific job role, profession, or industry can be extremely valuable.
And that is where transferable skills come in.
So what are transferable skills?
They’re skills. They are not just any skills though, they’re the ones that can be applied across various industries and roles.?
You naturally develop a wide variety of skills as you go through your working career - engaging in such a wide range of activities in your role you will naturally build these up over time.?
You also gain them outside of work – at school, at university, during your hobbies and interests, even volunteering.
As you acquire more transferable skills, your job performance and productivity improves.?
According to Indeed the top transferable skills that are sought after are:
With a list like this, it can be tempting to think that transferable skills are somehow less valuable than technical skills. That they are somehow “soft skills” because they’re “vague” or “general”.
But, research shows that transferable skills are increasingly attractive to employers and highly sought after. The good news is that more and more employers are recognising the importance of these skills.?
Technical skills can be taught a lot easier than these transferable skills.?
With competition in candidates being higher and more competitive than ever, a good range of quality transferable skills signals that someone is more likely to make a positive contribution from day one.
This is not something that either employers or candidates should overlook. Skills such as communication and project management are vital in nearly every job, and these come from experience and practice.
What’s better is that these skills, by their very nature, are not fixed to a job or an industry. They are universal and should be treated with that importance in mind.

Along with April showers, this month brings the UK several employment laws and payment rate changes.

From flexible working conditions and carer’s leave to increases in national minimum wage (NMW) and national living wage (NLW) and a drop in the percentage of National Insurance Contributions (NICs) collected from some workers’ paychecks, there are many changes to watch out for.?
Among the changes is how holiday pay and leave will be calculated for leave entitlement for irregular hours or part-year workers.
April will also see initial feedback emerge from the government’s consultation last year on the umbrella company market.

Job Boards & Recruitment Platforms To Tackle Job Scams
Job boards and recruitment platforms are urged to join a new certification scheme as reports of job-related scams quadruple.
JobsAware’s government-backed, industry-driven certification scheme will help protect jobseekers, employer brands and recruitment platforms from advertisement scams and fraud, organisers said.
Research from the campaigning organisation shows a rise of 259% in job scam reports from Q4 in 2022 to 2023. It also shows three in four jobseekers want more action from job boards to prevent fraudulent activity.
Work From Home Harms Promotion Prospects
People who work from home all or part of the time are less likely to get pay rises and promotions, fresh academic research into hybrid working has suggested, with men more likely to be penalised.
A survey of 937 UK managers found that they were 11% less likely to promote staff who worked entirely from home than those who were completely office-based. Hybrid workers were on average 7% less likely to be promoted.
Managers were 9% less likely to give a pay rise to staff working entirely from home than to those who were completely office-based, and 7% less likely to give one to hybrid workers.
Manufacturing Future Improves
A jump in domestic orders has ended a two-year UK manufacturing dip, with output improving to a 20-month high.
As a result, job losses have slowed. Manufacturers continued to remove jobs in March figures show, but at the slowest since last May, with the employment balance rebounding to 48.0 from 43.3 in February.
Rolls Royce Announces Major Recruitment Numbers
More than 1,000 Rolls-Royce jobs are in the pipeline in Derby in what marks the latest UK trade boost from the engineering giant.
The most recent employment drive comes off the back of a fresh $4.6bn AUD (£2.4bn) in Aukus funding from Australia last week.
The Australian government is providing the capital over the next ten years in a bid to clear bottlenecks on Rolls-Royce’s nuclear reactor production line.
