It's Earth Month! ??
?? Volunteer for the Anacostia River Earth Day Cleanup on April 20 from 10am-12pm! This is the Anacostia Watershed Society's largest annual volunteer event, and a family-friendly one. Join thousands of other volunteers to pick up trash and enjoy the Anacostia river. Register by April 15 .
?? Honor and celebrate our earth at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum on Saturday, April 20! Meet community partners like FRESHFARM, Grounded, and more, enjoy family-friendly maker activities, and explore their latest exhibition, "A Bold and Beautiful Vision". Plus, check out the inaugural weekend of the 2024 FRESHFARM ACM Farm Stand, the only direct-to-consumer farm stand of its kind East of the River in Ward 8. Learn more here !
??? Connect with Community Forklift at their First Friday event on May 3 from 5-8pm! There'll be live music, food and drinks, local artist and vendor booths, and discounts on salvaged and surplus home goods and building materials. Community Forklift is the DC area's nonprofit reuse center for home improvement supplies, collecting donations and making them available for low- and no-cost.
?? Looking for native plants? Earth Sangha's spring open house and native plant sale is happening on May 5 from 9am-1pm at their Wild Plant Nursery in Grove Point Park.
?? DC Emancipation Day is Tuesday, April 16
?? Join East of the River Steelband this weekend at Mayor Bower's DC Emancipation Day celebration. The parade starts at 2pm and performances at 3pm.
??? On April 16 from 2-5pm, join ONE DC, Serve Your City/Ward 6 Mutual Aid, and other partners to celebrate Emancipation Day at the Black Workers & Wellness Center in Anacostia. This community learning event , led by historian Bill Fletcher Jr., will discuss Palestine, Black America, and Black Internationalism.

?? Join us for an art therapy workshop, Sowing Seeds , led by local nonprofit Project Create. We'll be creating 3D mixed media artwork reflecting on the Spring Equinox at Steadfast Supply in Navy Yard on Sunday, April 28, from 11am-1pm. Sliding scale tickets ($25-50) will cover the cost of materials and all proceeds benefit Project Create!
??? In partnership with Philanthropy Together ahead of the We Give Summit, the Next Gen Giving Circle (an initiative administered by Spur Local) is co-hosting a panel discussion on Wednesday, May 1, from 6-8pm at ìpàdé. Hear from local funders, nonprofits, and giving circles about supporting equity in philanthropy during an era of backlash. Tickets are limited, so save your seat now !
?? Join us for an introductory photography workshop led by local nonprofit Critical Exposure. If you've ever thought about trying photography, now's your chance! On Saturday, May 4, from 11am-1pm at Steadfast Supply, they will guide us through the basics of composing compelling photos to tell a story. Tickets are $35 and all proceeds will be donated to Critical Exposure to support its work training local Black and Latine young people to use photography & storytelling to organize for educational justice.
?? On May 18, join us at Rainbow Families' 21st Annual Family Conference from 8:30am-4:30pm at the National Cathedral School! Visit Spur Local's table, attend morning workshops, and join in the afternoon family fun time. There will be music, games, arts & crafts, performances and demo from DC Cheer, the Real Housegays of Washington, storytime by Tara Hoot, and so much more. There will also be a Kids Camp and Teen/Tween Camp. Family registration starts at $42 per adult. Learn more and register now !

There are several nonprofit categories you can nominate your favorites for: Best Arts & Culture Nonprofit, Best Charity Event, Best Nonprofit, Best Place to Volunteer, and more. We'd love to see some small local nonprofits nominated this year! Send in your nominations by June 10 and WCP will announce picks starting mid-July.
?? ICYMI, last month, Yield Giving -- a philanthropic initiative funded by Mackenzie Scott-- announced its new nonprofit grantees, which included 15 local DMV nonprofits! 11 of these selected are Spur Local nonprofit partners, including Spark the Journey, highlighted here on NBC4. Congratulations!
