Richard East on the National Minimum Wage 2024

As the new National Minimum Wage kicks in this April, our founder Richard East reflects on the last 25 years, and what this new amount means moving forward.

“In 1999, Tony Blair’s Labour Government introduced the very first UK minimum wage nationally. People over 22 years received £3.60 per hour and 18-21 year olds received £3 per hour. Numerous economists and business leaders voiced concern that business costs would increase to a dangerous level and lead to subsequent redundancies and high unemployment.

This was later proven not to be the case and companies absorbed the cost, lifting many low paid employees out of poverty.

Fast forward 25 years, and from 1st April 2024, the national minimum wage is now £11.44 for people over 21 years and £8.60 for 18-20 year olds.

The National Minimum wage can be applauded as a success (So far!)

The UK now has one of the highest minimum wages in Europe.

However, in recent years many companies have struggled to accommodate rising minimum wage with the economy being at a low ebb and business costs rising in all areas from energy to tax.

Compliance Manager Emilia Trzcinka

Spotlight on Compliance

Keeping up-to-date with compliance is crucial in safely recruiting and managing staff. This month we chat with Emilia Trzcinka, our Compliance Manager who has been with RE for nearly 10 years about her role here.

RE: What does compliance cover in recruitment?

ET: The range is quite wide, from legal requirements to ethical standards, audit preparation and completion, risk management and implementing policies and processes.

RE: Does every recruitment company have a compliance department?

ET: I don’t believe so, but it’s beneficial as it enables the business to focus on constant improvement while legal and ethical standards are effectively managed. We also support our clients daily, for example, we assist them with external audits and training provisions, provide them with policy templates, and assist in their implementation to safeguard both their internal staff and supplied workers.

RE: Tell us about the team at RE.

ET: All of our Compliance Officers are ICA qualified and have extensive experience in the relevant sectors. We cooperate closely with regulators like GLAA or industry associations like ALP or REC, which gives us instant insight about any legal changes and up-to-date information or industry standards.

RE: And what does the department do to support workers?

ET: We spread awareness about ethical standards that should be met, offer support to Modern Slavery victims and deal with concerns workers may have about their role and work environment.

Getting our wellies on

This year we are supporting two charities, Winston’s Wish and Action Medical Research.

In February we donned wellies in the office to raise money, and we will be holding lots more events this year, including pilates, a pub quiz, Friday Breakfast Club, a big raffle and more.

We’ll also be holding a company sweepstake for the Grand National and Euros. To download a free copy of our sweepstake form to use in your business, click here.
