April 2024 news
Some initial musings: marketplaces, bazaars and exchanges
Given all the wonderful conferences that have been going on globally in digital, data and analytics, one can only be impressed by the talent that exists in the private, public and third sector. How does one harness this collective energy into a vehicle for doing the doing? The idea of marketplace, bazaars or exchanges, although not novel in thinking, seems apt.
Online marketplaces such as Amazon and the Apple iOS App Store are colossal examples of creativity, scalability, and customer-centricity in the context of digital transformation. These platforms have not only completely changed the way we shop and use technology, but they also provide priceless insights for a new industry: the marketplace for health data and analytics. Learning and adapting these models has enormous potential to improve policy making, research, and healthcare delivery, especially in systems such as the NHS. The transformation of Amazon from an online book seller to a massive marketplace serves as a masterclass in both scope and customer service. The essential component? an unwavering commitment to comprehending and meeting consumer requirements, supported by a strong technological foundation that can manage enormous volumes of data and transactions with ease. Comparably, Apple's iOS App Store transformed the way that software was distributed, establishing an environment in which developers could offer cutting-edge apps to millions of consumers while also upholding strict security and quality guidelines. These illustrations highlight a number of essential elements of a prosperous online marketplace:
These ideas have the potential to revolutionise the health data environment. Through the sharing of insights, algorithms, and best practices among healthcare practitioners, researchers, and policymakers, an online marketplace for health data and analytics might promote innovation in medical research, democratise access to important information, and enhance healthcare outcomes. But developing such a market, particularly inside the NHS framework, comes with additional difficulties. These difficulties include having to deal with strict data protection laws, ensuring interoperability between various IT systems, and upholding public confidence. It is imperative that the public and private sectors work together. While the public sector offers oversight, access to extensive datasets, and the mission to prioritise public health outcomes, the private sector can offer technology competence, creativity, and agility. With its extensive data archives and public health responsibility, the NHS might be a key player in this kind of market. A few essential components are needed for the NHS to properly leverage a health data marketplace:
The NHS can create a health data marketplace that has the potential to revolutionise healthcare delivery and outcomes by taking a cue from the success of companies like Amazon and Apple and providing a clear path that tackles the particular difficulties faced by the healthcare industry. All parties involved must work together with creativity, trust, and cooperation in order to achieve this.

Highlight:
AnalystX is thrilled to extend a heartfelt thanks to the NHS South East Skill Development network (SDN) for the invitation to participate in their steering group. This initiative represents a significant step forward in supporting continuous learning and development for all health and care professionals across the region.
The NHS has consistently demonstrated a commendable commitment to fostering a skilled and adaptable workforce. The establishment of the SDN, and now its expansion to the South East, signifies a clear recognition of the importance of ongoing professional development in delivering exceptional patient care.
In today's rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, staying abreast of the latest advancements and best practices is crucial. The SDN provides a vital platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and accessing a wealth of learning resources. This comprehensive approach empowers NHS staff to excel in their roles, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.
Furthermore, the dedication to digitalising the NHS workforce is particularly noteworthy. The SDN's role in facilitating this transformation is commendable. Equipping healthcare professionals with the necessary digital skills is essential for optimising patient care pathways, streamlining processes, and ensuring efficient service delivery.
AnalystX is firmly committed to supporting the development of this valuable network. We see immense potential for collaboration and knowledge sharing. We are eager to explore opportunities to work together in creating a dynamic and impactful learning environment for the NHS workforce in the South East.
Together, we can empower healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the ever-changing healthcare landscape. This, in turn, will contribute to a more robust and future-proof NHS, delivering exceptional care to patients across the region.

THE EDGE OF THE CHASM? ? Ever heard of ‘the chasm’?? ? It’s the point in the life cycle of a product where it crosses from the enthusiastic early adopters to the wider population.? ? This tends to be the point when 16% of your market have jumped on board and the next step is mainstreaming the product.? ? From its launch in October 2023, the National Competency Framework team have been up and down the country raising awareness of the framework itself and the benefits it can bring, supported by the fantastic testimonials of our pioneer adopter sites.? ?
Many organisations up and down the country are facing the same challenges of ?
The Framework begins to inform and underpin strategies and new ways of working to address these challenges. ? ? Perhaps more importantly it helps network people in other organisations facing similar issues to share learning and successes.? ?
By 23 April 2024, 15% of NHS Organisations in England have pledged and begun work on adopting the Framework. ? ?
THE NATIONAL COMPETENCY FRAMEWORK IS APPROACHING THE CHASM!!? Almost teetering on the 16% edge, backed by the innovators and early adopters, seeking to make the leap to the ‘early majority’? ?
Let’s make no bones about it, this is the make or break point for the Framework. ?
Fail to cross the chasm and all that early potential and promise will never be fully realised.?Another promising product that failed to mainstream.? ? Can we afford for it to fall?? ? The challenges will still be there but we lose a weapon in our arsenal to tackle them.?A vehicle for change and collaboration veers from the road never to be seen again? ?
And if not the Framework, then what??What other tool helps describe the roles we do across the increasing complexity and autonomy??What else splits the skill from the domain to focus on what you are doing, not just where you are doing it? How else do we showcase the wonderful career paths we have within data and analytics to a new starter?? ?
WE NEED YOUR HELP!!? ? If you feel the Framework has potential to help you navigate and overcome your recruitment and retention challenges – make the adoption pledge? ?
If you think the framework can help your staff on the journey to achieving professional registration – make the adoption pledge? ?
If you believe your workforce deserve the recognition and support to grow their skills – make the adoption pledge? ? If you acknowledge that ‘Data Saves Lives’; invest in your data and analytics workforce – make the adoption pledge? ?
Help us leap the chasm and rise to the challenges ahead as a strong and vibrant profession, working collaboratively for the benefit of our workforce, the insights it provides and the impacts it can bring to patient care? ? PLEDGE HERE: https://lnkd.in/eafTYPcE?

Data Visualisation Style Guide Launch!?
The Data Visualisation Service team at NHS England has developed a style guide for designing data visualisation products in the NHS.?
Created in collaboration with User Centred Designers, it sets out the rules and best practices that you should follow when building your dashboard. These principles are tool-agnostic and universally applicable.?
The best part? It is publicly accessible and free to use!?
Design standards are crucial in making the dashboards we develop recognisably NHS products. It creates a brand that users can trust. Moreover, the use of consistent design patterns induces smooth user experiences across different product teams, reducing cognitive load.?
This a big step forward towards delivering a consistent user experience across data visualisation products in the NHS!?
For dashboards developed in Tableau, we have created a set of Templates to supercharge the development process. This is good news for Tableau developers, as these will drastically reduce the time it takes you to go from concept to a sharp prototype. As such, we recommend that these templates be used as the starting point for all Tableau dashboard development.?
With everything you need in one place, developers can now focus on what they do best: developing killer data visualisations. Say goodbye to painful formatting tweaks for good! If you're eager to find out more on how to use the Tableau Templates, check out our dedicated webpage.?

Analysing accuracy, balancing bias: Can ChatGPT be used to ease the care documentation burden?
Care managers dedicate 6 hours per week transcribing handwritten notes from meetings into electronic databases. AI now is being used to automatically generate audio recordings of case management meetings into case notes, freeing up workers to spend more time assessing needs and arranging care. But how reliable are these tools? There can be racial disparities in automatic speech recognition. They can record false information, including harmful and violent hallucinations. And how do we quantify the accuracy of free text summaries generated from these transcriptions?
The webinar will cover:
1. Racial disparities and harmful hallucinations in automated speech recognition (Allison Koenecke, Cornell Department of Information Science)
2. Adapted large language models can outperform medical experts in clinical text summarization (Dave Van Veen, Stanford Center for Artificial Intelligence)
