The Rundown

Twitter X

There’s been a lot of news on the Twitter front lately, including an announcement that advertisers won’t be able to run ads without a blue verified checkmark, and that it has ceased to be an independent company, merging with Elon Musk’s newly formed X Corp. All this has added to an even more uncertain future for the platform, causing many to abandon it, including esteemed media outlet NPR.

An inside look at White House news conferences

Does the President know what questions reporters are going to ask before a news conference? According to this Washington Post article, he does.

Online news giant shutters

As PR professionals, we’re no strangers to the shuttering of news outlets, but we’re still disappointed whenever we hear that yet another media business has folded. Buzzfeed News, which ushered in an era of digital-only outlets and pioneered the listicle, is closing its news division.

Links in bio

Instagram recently has expanded the number of links users can include in their profile from one to five. TBD on what this means for third-party link service providers like LinkTree, but this feature long has been requested by its users and will expand the ability for brands to drive traffic to various websites, which has been a pain on the platform.

Inside Baseball

The Children’s Tower is here

On April 30, the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) will open its Children’s Tower – RVA’s new home for pediatric inpatient, emergency and trauma care. Late last month, we welcomed media, donors, doctors, nurses, community members and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin to a ribbon-cutting to celebrate and showcase the new tower. WRIC-TV and WTVR-TV covered the ribbon-cutting, and the Richmond Times-Dispatch previewed the Children’s Tower. Greg McQuade of CBS 6 highlighted Children’s Miracle Network Ambassador Nora and the wonderful care she received at CHoR in his “Heroes Among Us” feature. In addition, we worked with Estes Express Lines – which has donated nearly $2 million to the Children’s Tower effort – as it donated 100 “squishmallow” toys in advance of the grand opening. WTVR-TV and RVA Hub had the coverage.

Learning from the past

Colonial Williamsburg’s ongoing excavation of the original site of the historic First Baptist Church revealed that three men buried in the early 1800s on the site were members of the church’s congregation. The Washington Post, The Associated Press, Smithsonian and Archaeology Magazine were among the outlets to cover the latest findings from this incredible project.

Welcoming a new leader to United Way

As longtime supporters of the United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg, we were more than excited to help introduce Barbara Couto Sipe as the nonprofit’s new CEO. The Richmond Times-Dispatch, WRIC-TV and Virginia Business highlighted Sipe’s announcement.

Lifting our spirits

For our work with the new Virginia Spirits Board, our team wrapped a series of Discovery Meet and Greets around the state. Over four weeks, we met with about a quarter of Virginia’s distillers, gaining valuable insights to inform our efforts and building key relationships. And this month, we sent our premiere edition of our monthly newsletter to the Virginia distilling community.

Free clinics filling void for Virginians

News has been aplenty involving the Virginia Association of Free and Charitable Clinics. From Medicaid unwinding and low-cost prescriptions to a new dental expansion, free clinics around the state have been offering a helping hand. Recent coverage includes WDBJ-TV; WVEC-TV; WTKR-TV; WAVY-TV; the Daily News-Record; and Urban Views RVA.

Hunger hits home

Proposed cuts to SNAP at the federal level could impact families across Virginia. We offered insights from No Kid Hungry Virginia to WTKR-TV, WAVY-TV, WTVR-TV and others.
