The New Psychosocial Hazards At Work Code Of Practice….
One 1st April 2023, a new Code of Practice was implemented across Australia that covers “Psychosocial Hazards.” The code is available via Safe Work Australia, and is important for all HR Managers, Business Owner’s and Director’s to understand the challenges that it will bring. Remember that creating a safe workplace is more than just the physical hazards in today’ world!!
What Are Psychosocial Hazards And Why Is It Important?
Psychosocial hazards refer to the various work-related factors that can cause psychological and emotional distress to employees. These hazards can arise from various sources, such as the work environment, job demands, relationships with co-workers, and organizational culture. These hazards can have significant negative effects on employees, including burnout, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.
One of the most significant psychosocial hazards is work-related stress. Work-related stress is caused by job demands that exceed an employee's abilities or resources. When employees are faced with overwhelming job demands, they can experience physical and emotional exhaustion, decreased job satisfaction, and increased absenteeism. Work-related stress can also lead to increased conflicts with co-workers, as well as decreased productivity and job performance.
Another significant psychosocial hazard is workplace harassment. Workplace harassment can take many forms, including sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and discrimination based on age, race, gender, or other personal characteristics. Workplace harassment can cause significant psychological distress for employees, leading to decreased job satisfaction, increased absenteeism, and even physical health problems.
Workplace violence is another psychosocial hazard that can have significant negative effects on employees. Workplace violence can include physical assault, threats, and intimidation. Employees who are subjected to workplace violence can experience significant psychological trauma, leading to post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression.
Organizational culture is another significant psychosocial hazard that can impact employees. When an organization has a toxic culture, employees can experience psychological distress, leading to decreased job satisfaction, increased absenteeism, and even physical health problems. Toxic cultures can include bullying, gossiping, and favoritism, which can create an environment of fear and distrust.
In conclusion, psychosocial hazards are a significant issue in the workplace that can have significant negative effects on employees. Employers must take steps to identify and address these hazards to ensure the well-being of their employees. This can include providing resources for employees to cope with stress, implementing policies and procedures to prevent workplace harassment and violence, and creating a positive organizational culture that promotes psychological well-being. By addressing psychosocial hazards, employers can create a safer and healthier workplace for all employees.
Business Inspiration & Updates Of The Week…
From Idea to Impact - Lessons Learned from Building a Successful Business
Starting a business is no small feat. It requires vision, courage, and the ability to take risks. But with determination and hard work, it's possible to turn an idea into a thriving business that makes a real impact in the world.
As someone who has been through the ups and downs of small business (and still going through it!), I've learned some valuable lessons that I'd like to share with other aspiring business owners.
Lesson 1: Find Your Why
Before you start a business, it's important to know your "why" - your purpose and motivation for doing what you do. Your why will guide your decision-making and help you stay focused on what truly matters.

For me, my why was to help people live healthier and happier lives. This passion led me to start a health and wellness company that offers personalized coaching and nutrition plans.
Lesson 2: Build a Strong Team
No one can build a successful business alone. You need a team of talented and dedicated individuals who share your vision and can help bring it to life.
When hiring, look for people who have the skills and experience you need, but also share your values and work ethic. Invest in training and development to help your team grow and evolve with your business.
Lesson 3: Embrace Failure
Not every idea or decision will lead to success. Failure is an inevitable part of entrepreneurship, but it's also an opportunity to learn and grow. I’ve had a few….
Instead of dwelling on your mistakes, use them as a chance to pivot, iterate, and improve. Keep an open mind and be willing to adapt as you go.
Lesson 4: Stay Focused
As your business grows, it can be tempting to chase every opportunity that comes your way. But spreading yourself too thin can lead to burnout and a loss of focus.
Stay true to your core mission and values, and prioritize the projects and initiatives that align with them. Be strategic and intentional in your decision-making, and don't be afraid to say "no" when something doesn't fit with your goals.
Lesson 5: Celebrate Your Wins
Finally, it's important to take the time to celebrate your wins - both big and small. Building a business is a marathon, not a sprint, and it's important to acknowledge and appreciate the progress you've made along the way.
Celebrate your team's achievements, acknowledge your own growth and development, and take pride in the impact your business is making in the world.
Starting and building a business is no easy task, but it can be incredibly rewarding. By staying true to your purpose, building a strong team, embracing failure, staying focused, and celebrating your wins, you can turn your idea into a successful and impactful business.
