The Price of Peace

April Monthly Event

Peace is associated with many characteristics that are considered desirable, including better economic outcomes, measures of well-being, levels of inclusiveness and environmental sustainability. The real question here is how we act as individuals and as a collective. Are our urges to react without a second thought to every action we encounter greater than peace? Is our desire to be considered important by others worth many deaths and sufferings? What are we willing to pay for peace?

To maintain peace and be peace is a courageous act! These acts can be as simple as letting go of that prestigious job with countless benefits along with the toxicity in its package or as big as sacrificing a life for an idea that protects society.

Sister Asayech: Resilience in Essece

Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Sister Asayech was the seventh child in her large and caring family household. Her compassionate father who believed in giving back to his community was her biggest inspiration. He was a successful businessman who actively participated in and contributed to building churches, schools, and bridges. Witnessing his selfless acts and dedication from an early age made her who she is today.

Sister Asayech graduated in 1996 and quickly followed in her father’s footsteps by community volunteering while working for a health center on the side. After working at the health center for six years she joined the Integrated Services for AIDS Prevention and Support Organization (ISAPSO), a local NGO focused on combating the spread of HIV/AIDS. For two years, Sister Asayech dedicated her time and efforts to this organization, contributing to its objectives and initiatives in addressing the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS.

Beyond Conflict: The Power of Gender-Inclusive Peacebuilding

In a world often defined by division and discord, the concept of moving beyond conflict takes on a profound significance. The journey towards lasting peace and reconciliation is a complex and multifaceted endeavor, requiring a deep understanding of the root causes of conflict and a commitment to finding common ground. At the heart of moving beyond conflict is the recognition that true peace does not merely involve the absence of war or violence, but the presence of justice, equality, and mutual respect. It requires a willingness to engage in difficult conversations, to listen with empathy, and to seek understanding even amid disagreement. One of the key challenges in moving beyond conflict is the presence of deep-seated grievances and historical injustices that can fuel ongoing animosities. Addressing these underlying issues requires a commitment to truth and reconciliation, as well as a recognition of the need for accountability and reparations where harm has been done. In many cases, moving beyond conflict also involves a process of forgiveness and healing, both on an individual and a societal level.

Here’s to Mediocrity

I’ve been staring at this blank screen for minutes now, though it feels like an eternity. I? despise looking at a new page. To me, the blank page feels like a breeding ground for various? emotions: fear, feelings of inadequacy, judgment and mockery — not necessarily from others,? but from my own comparison to others’ writings that I perceive to be flawless. I attribute these? feelings of terror to an array of factors. Translating one’s thoughts into words is challenging? enough, but when we add emotions that feel ineffable, and experiences, we suspect to be? unrelatable, the endeavor feels cumbersome, if not impossible.?

Wherever you go, there you are

At a certain point in our lives, more than once for many, we all had a dream of ‘traveling’ or moving to someplace new and starting over. I too fell prey to those sweet yearnings repeatedly, looking for my great perhaps. I felt like I was not thriving and not getting the things I wanted in life was because of the environment I was in. If only I had an opportunity to show my unique, smart, amazing self. Nobody understood me- I did not show my true self. I let people see the outside shell, the persona I created to blend in. I kept fantasizing about the day I would just pack up and leave this godforsaken place I couldn’t be myself in.

Alongside some successful women, there are men

I recall that Dr. Lia’s husband, Tewodros Tadesse, was nominated as a panelist for a program called “Men Who Are Supporting Women” in 2015, and I was fascinated by his story.? A man who knows his worth and loves to share with his family.? The traditional patriarchal formula of a woman in the kitchen and the man in the boardroom was not their story.? Both would be in the kitchen and boardrooms on their own accord without feeling intimidated by each other or norms in all social roles.? I noticed the saying, “Behind every successful man, there is a woman,” now reversed, “Alongside some successful women, there are men.”?????
