Apprentices must be employed by your organisation for a minimum of 30 hours per week and should be paid above the minimum apprenticeship wage which is currently set at £4.81 per hour for their first year and at least the national minimum wage thereafter. We do, however, encourage our employers to pay apprentices more where possible.
Apprenticeships are perfect for both current employees as well as new team members recruited into the role.
To start an apprenticeship, learners must:
Be over 16 years old.
Have the right to work in England (spend at least 50% of their working hours in England during their apprenticeship).
Be a UK resident.
Recruitment process
You can recruit an apprentice free of charge using the national apprenticeship service website, you will need to create a new employer account if you have not done so already, our expert business can help you with this free of charge.
Recruiting an apprentice can be challenging, here at Kiwi, we are dedicated to guide you through the apprentice recruitment process, helping you with what skills to look out for and how to get the best from any potential apprentice at interview. Our assessors/ business advisory team will also interview the candidate to ensure that they are ready for the apprenticeship program and for work.
The apprenticeship journey.
There are three stages to an apprenticeship:
The apprenticeship learning – Apprentices follow a learning programme that will include taught sessions, workshops and self-study. All apprentices will follow this programme while doing their day job, where they can apply their learning in a practical way. Employers must allow apprentices to spend a minimum of six hours a week of their working hours in training.
Gateway assessment – Apprentices enter Gateway before the start of end-point assessment (EPA). This is to assess the apprentice's ability to meet the minimum requirements set out in the apprenticeship standard.
End-point assessment – End-point assessment is the end of the apprentice's learning journey. It's their final opportunity to demonstrate their learning and the skills which they have adopted along the way. An independent assessor determines if the learner meets the standard for achieving the apprenticeship.
