Apprenticeships - the credible alternative to University

Before I start, let me first clarify that this post is not meant to offend our venerable academic establishments nor a significant proportion of the Linkedin community who have benefited from the learning and development they provide. University isn't for everyone, neither is an apprenticeship.
What I am keen to highlight are the real and tangible benefits of the apprenticeship route as a rite of passage into a lifelong career. Whilst this should not be the prime reason for choosing the apprentice option, the financial benefits are significant. For Metalcraft, who's apprentices benefit from a 5 year apprenticeship, we have calculated that they will be at least £100,000* better off at that point than a graduate who has completed 2 years of A-levels and a 3 year degree.
The real benefits for me are the exposure to the real world of work over the 5 years completing an apprenticeship which is a massive headstart in the employability stakes compared to a graduate. This can set an individual on a career path which will lead to all levels within the organisation, over 50% of our employee's are former apprentices (more than 40% being trained at Metalcraft).
I would still advocate that a University degree is a real benefit to an individual, this is still possible after completing an apprenticeship when an employer will potentially pick up the course costs.
An apprenticeship will never have the same kudos as going to University but the current focus can only help raise awareness of our young people and their parents.
