Apprenticeship Reforms: A Boost for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s Workforce

Apprenticeship Reforms: A Boost for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s Workforce

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced major reforms to England's apprenticeship system, introducing a growth and skills levy to replace the current apprenticeship levy. These changes are set to create new opportunities for young people, particularly in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, where key sectors like health and social care, technology, and manufacturing are facing critical skills shortages.

Key Changes for the Region

The new foundation apprenticeships will give young people pathways into vital sectors, allowing them to earn a wage while developing essential skills. Shorter apprenticeships, now eligible for funding, will offer greater flexibility for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region, enabling them to train workers in a way that fits their needs. The reforms also shift focus toward younger workers, asking businesses to fund more of their level 7 apprenticeships outside the levy, encouraging companies to invest in the next generation of talent.

Addressing Local Skills Gaps

The first report from Skills England highlights growing skills shortages across the UK, with over 2.5 million roles in critical demand. In Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, the healthcare and education sectors are particularly affected, and these reforms will provide essential support for training and recruitment in these areas.

Building a Stronger Future

With Skills England helping to shape training priorities, these reforms will equip Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s workforce with the skills needed to drive long-term economic growth. For local businesses and young people, this means greater access to tailored training and a brighter future for the region’s economy.
